A common joke in DC Comics revolves around how lengths Bruce Wayne goes to in order to keep his identity as Batman a secret. He usually pretends to be clumsy or scared to account for Batman’s sudden appearances. Sometimes, though, Bruce has to explain how he knows things or has skills he shouldn’t possess when he’s saving people as himself. Recently, Batman’s secret was revealed to his new girlfriend in a funny situation.
Batman #5, written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Jorge Jiménez, shows a rare night off for Bruce Wayne. He’d planned a dinner date with psychiatrist Dr. Annika Zeller, who is known for protecting the mentally ill and even debated Hugo Strange publicly. However, Bruce quickly realizes Annika is more focused on securing funding for her research from the Wayne Foundation than on a romantic connection with him.
I was completely on the edge of my seat as things went south for Bruce that evening! He discovered he was being pursued, and suddenly he and his companion were dodging a relentless chase through Little Tokyo – a whole group of assassins on motorcycles, no less! But honestly, watching him work was incredible. He skillfully evaded them time and time again. And even when this unbelievably dangerous assassin, The Ojo, cornered him and transformed into a flock of birds, Batman still managed to win! It was a truly breathtaking display of skill.
Just like classic Batman, Bruce skillfully avoided answering Annika’s questions about his surprising abilities. Whether it was his incredible driving or his strength in rescuing her, he clearly exceeded her expectations. She admitted she’d thought of their dinner as a date, pointing to her fancy heels and outfit. Ultimately, it looked like both Bruce’s secret identity and his romantic interest were safe for the time being.
How Bruce Wayne’s new girlfriend learned he’s Batman
Just when things were looking dire, an unexpected ally actually complicated Batman’s attempt to keep his identity a secret. Trapped by the Ojo, Bruce prepared to fight, but his son, the current Robin, Damian Wayne, arrived just in time to help – though his arrival wasn’t quite what Batman needed.
Robin managed to fend off Ojo, explaining he’d observed her tactics while training with the League of Assassins. He quickly reminded his father, Batman, that he hadn’t broken his rule against killing. However, despite being frightened, Annika overheard Robin call Batman “father,” a detail Batman hadn’t intended to share.
It’s uncertain how this new information will affect Bruce’s budding relationship. They’d met previously when he was Batman, and he hadn’t been very nice to her. She’ll probably be suspicious of his motives, wondering if he was genuinely interested in getting to know her or if he was just investigating her because of the criminals she helps.
Batman #5 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
