EA and Battlefield Studios have been prioritizing performance improvements for *Battlefield 6*, particularly on PC. However, developers also found the Xbox Series S to be a challenging platform. Technical Director Christian Buhl told Kotaku that the console’s less powerful hardware compared to other current-generation consoles made it difficult to optimize *Battlefield 6* for the Series S.
According to Buhl, one of the biggest hurdles they faced during development was the limited memory of the Xbox Series S. He explained that the Series S has less memory than a typical mid-range PC, and about 6 to 12 months ago, they discovered many of their game levels were crashing on the console.
So, because of the feedback about performance, the team at Battlefield Studios really started digging into how much memory *Battlefield 6* was using. Turns out, fixing that not only helped the game run better on PC, but it actually made the whole experience smoother and more stable on every platform – even the Xbox Series S. Though, to be fair, we *did* still do some specific tweaks just for the Series S to make sure it ran its best.
According to Buhl, after extensive testing and data collection, they identified and fixed memory issues on the Series S console within a couple of months. They were able to pinpoint the problems by running various game levels through their testing process.
According to Buhl, the Xbox Series S version of *Battlefield 6* is running very well and performing smoothly. He’s confirmed it will achieve a consistent 60 frames per second on the console.
So, the devs did work to get the game running on the Xbox Series S, which is cool. But when I asked EA about it maybe coming to other consoles, like the Switch 2, they wouldn’t say anything about it. They just stayed quiet on that front.
When asked if the new *Battlefield* shooter would be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, an EA representative responded that they couldn’t discuss platforms beyond the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro.
Earlier this month, a representative from Battlefield Studios explained that they chose not to include ray tracing in the next *Battlefield* game to ensure smooth performance. Even though the series heavily featured ray tracing in *Battlefield 5*, there are currently no plans to add it to the upcoming title in the future.
I was asking about ray tracing for the game, and the developer, Buhl, said it won’t be included at launch, and they don’t have any plans to add it anytime soon. Basically, they really wanted to prioritize performance and make sure the game runs smoothly for as many people as possible, even on standard settings. So, they decided to focus all their energy on optimization instead of trying to implement ray tracing. It was a conscious choice to make the game accessible and perform well for everyone.
Battlefield 6 is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on October 10.
