Even before its release, players of the upcoming Battlefield 6 expressed concerns about the size of the multiplayer maps, and how they compare to previous Battlefield games. After receiving criticism for Battlefield: RedSec’s map design – and praise for the community-created maps in the Portal mode – lead producer David Sirland acknowledged the feedback. He stated they definitely need to include more large, open maps in the game.
When a player criticized the maps as being small, lacking good views, and too straightforward, Sirland pointed out that not all maps are like that. He explained that Battlefield games feature a variety of map designs. However, he did admit that some of the criticism directed at the recently released Blackwell Fields map from Season 1 is justified.
Okay, so a lot of us are frustrated with the map layout right now. It feels super exposed with hardly any cover, and it’s way too easy for people to just camp near their base with vehicles and pick us off. The devs, Sirland, said they know it’s a problem – they admitted the map feels really cramped for air vehicles. Honestly, we’re just waiting to see if they’ll actually do anything about it. We’ll have to keep an eye out for future updates, I guess.
Despite the delay, the team at DICE and Battlefield Studios is still actively working on improvements. They’ve recently detailed a major update focused on making challenges and assignments less frustrating by simplifying their requirements. More updates, both to download and applied directly to servers, are on the way to refine the experience even further.
On November 18th, a new map called Eastwood will be added to Season 1, along with a new game mode called Sabotage. Players can also expect the return of Battle Pickups, plus two new weapons – the DB-12 and M357 Trait – and the Troy Angled attachment.
The map definitely has problems with how cramped the flying areas are. However, not all maps are like that – Battlefield games have always included a variety of map designs. We could really use more of the big, open maps, though!
