Battlefield 6 review and Metacritic score roundup — does what could be the biggest FPS of the year live up to everyone’s sky-high expectations?

2025 hasn’t seen many new shooting games so far, aside from big titles like DOOM: The Dark Ages and Borderlands 4. But that’s about to change this fall, with several major shooting games planned for release.

Battlefield 6 is a highly anticipated game with the potential to become the most popular new first-person shooter.

I’m expecting a big launch for the newest game in the popular Battlefield series. Electronic Arts is releasing it on October 10th, and it looks like it’s going to be really popular with players.

Excitement for the game grew after people liked the first look at its multiplayer mode, and it’s only increased since the open beta in August. The beta tests saw Battlefield 6 attract over 500,000 players on Steam.

Considering the anticipation, it’s understandable that people are eager to see what critics say about the new Battlefield game. Now that the review embargo has ended, reviews are available online for everyone to read.

Battlefield 6 has received generally positive reviews, averaging 84 out of 100 on Metacritic. This score is based on 44 reviews from players on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.

At long last, Battlefield is back

Given how much players enjoyed the Battlefield 6 Open Beta, it’s no surprise that reviews for the game are overwhelmingly positive across the board.

I wasn’t surprised by how things unfolded this week, even though I’d heard rumors the campaign wouldn’t be very impressive.

Most reviewers agree that the biggest weakness of Battlefield 6 is its single-player story. They found the plot confusing and the characters underdeveloped. Instead of letting players experience the large-scale, action-packed battles Battlefield is known for, the game saves those moments for cutscenes, which feels disappointing.

Although the campaign itself could be better, everything else about the experience has been widely praised.

Most fans agree this game is a strong return to quality for the Battlefield series, especially after the disappointing launch of Battlefield 2042. It successfully brings back the classic class-based gameplay, and adds a ton of new weapons and unique gadgets for each class.

Battlefield 6 offers improved vehicle handling and takes environmental destruction to a new level – it’s more detailed and impactful than anything seen in previous Battlefield games. Players can enjoy a diverse range of maps and game modes, featuring both beloved classics and exciting new experiences.

As a tech and gaming fan, I have to say Battlefield 6’s Portal mode is really impressive. It took the foundation laid by Battlefield 2042 and built a seriously powerful tool for creating custom maps and game modes – it’s a lot like Halo Infinite’s Forge, letting you really tailor the experience.

After the game launches, even more content is planned through seasonal updates. Season 1 starts on October 28th and will add three new maps, weapons, and other features over time. A battle royale mode is also coming to the game, though it’s not yet confirmed if it will be available right away or in a future update. We’ll have more details soon!

While I was a little disappointed with the single-player campaign, overall, Battlefield 6 looks like exactly what fans have been waiting for. I’m really excited to get my hands on it and start playing as soon as possible.

You can now preorder the game on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. A special offer at Loaded (formerly CDKeys) has the Phantom Edition for Xbox available for $89.99.
