Battlefield 6’s Bigger Maps Are Still Coming: They’re “One of the Most Time-Intensive Things”

Players have consistently asked for larger maps in the Battlefield series, reminiscent of older games. This desire intensified even after Battlefield 6 launched and quickly sold over seven million copies. The release of Blackwell Fields in Season 1 sparked significant negative feedback, and even the game’s lead producer, David Sirland, acknowledged the need for bigger, more open maps.

It’s been over four months, and fans are wondering what’s happening with the next release. Producer Phil Girette says it’s still on its way, but asks for patience. He told The Gamer they appreciate the enthusiastic feedback and are glad people are enjoying what they’re creating.

Following the initial extension of Season 1 and a generally successful launch for Battlefield, we’ve decided to take more time with Season 2. The Season 1 extension likely contributed to players wondering when new content would arrive. We believe having fresh content available sooner would improve the player experience.

I was really excited to hear they’re bringing back maps like Golmud Railway from Battlefield 4 – that map is a classic! They’re promising even more maps this season, and apparently they’re going to be bigger too, which sounds awesome. But honestly, the dev said creating all these maps takes a ton of work, and I can totally see that being a huge time commitment.

Beyond what we’ve already done, as you’ll see in Season 2, we’re focusing on adding more maps, and making those maps larger. It’s important that these maps meet our quality standards and what players are hoping for. We’re currently testing the Golmud Railway map in our Labs environment, which is a good start. We definitely plan to create even more maps, but it’s worth noting that building high-quality maps takes a significant amount of time and effort.

It’s possible that taking a month to respond to fan feedback also contributed to the improvements. However, it appears the extra work paid off – future seasons should arrive on time, and this season will build a strong base for what’s next.

Season 2 currently features the Contaminated map, where players need gas masks to protect themselves. On March 17th, the season will continue with Nightfall, adding the Hagental Base location. Then, on April 14th, the Hunter/Prey phase will launch, including a special, limited-time game mode called Operation Augur. You can find a detailed schedule of updates here.
