This week, Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios released the Winter Offensive update for Battlefield 6. It’s the last of three seasonal updates for Battlefield 6’s first season and includes a new set of winter-themed challenges in the Battle Pass with unique rewards. Players can also experience a snow-covered version of the Empire State map with special ‘Ice Lock’ game modes in both Battlefield 6 and the free-to-play Battlefield REDSEC.
Battlefield 6 introduces a new version of Conquest called Ice Lock, along with a smaller 8v8 mode of Domination featuring three capture points. After playing Ice Lock for a few hours, I’ve really enjoyed its unique and interesting gameplay.
As an analyst, I’ve been observing the recent changes to the Empire State map, and while the new winter aesthetic is striking, it’s much more than just a cosmetic update. The weather effects are significantly impacting gameplay, fundamentally altering how players approach and navigate the map.
The new level’s extreme cold introduces the Freeze system, which stops all health recovery – even from medic bags. If you stay in the cold too long, it will slowly reduce your health to 35%. Visually, the cold adds a nice immersive effect by frosting over your screen and weapons, and even makes your soldier’s hands shake, showing the impact of the temperature.

To recover from being frozen or chilled, you need to stand near a heat source. These are usually metal barrels with roaring fires, but sometimes you’ll find burning piles of rubble. Getting close to a heat source quickly thaws you out, restarts your health recovery, and allows medic bags to heal you. Importantly, even fires created by incendiary grenades – whether thrown by you or your enemies – will provide warmth.
Okay, so Ice Lock has fires *everywhere* – at each capture point, and just littered around the map’s paths and good spots. But what I really love is that a lot of these fires are placed in areas where people usually *don’t* hang out on the regular Empire State map. It really changes up the gameplay and keeps you on your toes!
Warm areas on this map are really important, acting like mini-goals your team should focus on while trying to capture the main points. Since these warm spots aren’t in the usual places, the map plays very differently than you’re probably used to.
The game features a really engaging and unique way to play, and it encourages you to experiment with different equipment. Incendiary grenades can be used to quickly heal yourself and teammates when you’re injured and away from a heat source. However, they’re dangerous to enemies who are clustered together, especially around fires! Luckily, the Support class can intercept these grenades with a special gadget, adding another layer of strategy.

My only wish is that the game also included a frozen version of the Manhattan Bridge map, since it’s also located in New York. That map features tanks and armored vehicles, and it would have been fascinating to see how those vehicles could have worked with the game’s freezing mechanic. Maybe they could have acted as moving heaters, making them even more crucial for staying alive.
Ice Lock was a fantastic addition to Battlefield from EA and Battlefield Studios, really enhancing the Conquest mode on the Empire State map. I’d love to see more seasonal content like this – fresh, innovative ways to play the large-scale battles Battlefield is famous for. Something that’s a genuine change of pace, unlike the California Resistance’s Sabotage mode, which felt like a poorly designed, smaller-scale version of Rush.
Freeze is a bit unusual, and it can be annoying when it happens. However, it’s exactly this kind of innovative gameplay that we should be praising and encouraging the developers to explore further.
Don’t miss out on Ice Lock – it’s only around for a few more weeks, so be sure to give it a try! And remember to stay cool.
