With the launch of the free-to-play battle royale mode, Battlefield: RedSec, happening later today, the game’s lead producer, David Sirland, addressed concerns about vehicles being too powerful. Responding to a fan who worried the mode could be unbalanced without effective vehicle counters like RPGs, Sirland assured players that there are multiple ways to deal with vehicles.
Sirland hinted at changes in a recent social media post, writing, “There are ways to handle it outside of that… But you’ll see.” Although he didn’t elaborate, the message suggests that vehicles in Battlefield: RedSec will likely be less powerful than those in the standard multiplayer modes of Battlefield 6.
Battlefield Studios recently shared details about Season 1 of Battlefield 6, including updates on the battle royale mode. A key focus has been balancing vehicle strength. After testing in Battlefield Labs, developers adjusted helicopters and other combat vehicles to be powerful and useful, but not essential for winning matches.
So, the devs and I have been tweaking helicopters and tanks. They want to make sure they still feel like Battlefield – powerful and fun to use – but not so overpowered that you need them to win, especially towards the end of a match. They’ve made some big changes to how helicopter countermeasures work, and also adjusted how much ammo everything uses.
Battlefield Studios hadn’t yet announced a release date for their battle royale mode. However, that changed earlier this week when a rumor revealed the mode would be called Battlefield: RedSec just hours before the official announcement. The game, short for Redacted Sector, is expected to launch alongside the first season of Battlefield 6.
In the new Battlefield mode, RedSec, players will compete in teams of four, with 25 squads battling it out on a unique map. A key feature setting RedSec apart will be the inclusion of combat vehicles. Unlike games like PUBG where vehicles are mainly for getting around, RedSec’s vehicles will be powerful weapons in combat.
Since Battlefield: RedSec is similar to Battlefield 5’s Firestorm mode, it might include the dangerous, shrinking circle seen in that game. Unlike some other battle royale games, Firestorm’s circle instantly eliminates players, rather than slowly damaging them. This forces more decisive fights, as players can’t safely maneuver in and out of the circle during long battles.
Okay, so EA and the folks at Battlefield haven’t officially said what systems Battlefield: RedSec is coming to yet, but I’m pretty sure we can expect it on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. That just feels right, you know?
Theres ways to handle it outside of that. But you’ll see 😉
