The free-to-play battle royale mode for Battlefield 6, called Battlefield REDSEC, is now available, and it’s even larger than anticipated. Battlefield 6 is already one of the biggest games of 2025, and it’s expected to be a top seller, thanks to its excellent gameplay and the developers’ responsiveness to player feedback. The game has already sold 7 million copies in just three days, and sales are likely to climb even higher with new content on the way. Battlefield 6 offers a massive amount of content, including a campaign, traditional multiplayer, the battle royale mode, and the unique custom content available through its Portal feature.
As many had predicted, Battlefield REDSEC (short for Redacted Sector) has been unexpectedly released by EA. Last week, the Battlefield team gave me a preview of the game, explaining its different modes, and it’s surprisingly expansive. It’s not just another battle royale; it’s a completely separate game, though Battlefield 6 owners will get extra benefits.
Battlefield 6‘s Battle Royale Explained

Okay, so the main thing everyone’s excited about with Battlefield REDSEC is definitely the battle royale mode. They’re throwing 100 players onto this massive map – it’s the biggest Battlefield map ever, called Fort Lyndon, and it’s set in sunny Southern California. Interestingly, a map from Battlefield 6 Season 1, Eastwood, seems to be making an appearance! We’re seeing at least part of it as a point of interest in REDSEC, specifically the country club and even the golf carts. It’s not clear if the whole Eastwood map will be in the battle royale, but the country club area is definitely there, which is awesome!
Like other battle royale games, this one features a shrinking safe zone that forces players together. However, this zone is instantly deadly – touching it will immediately set you on fire. Unlike some games where you can position yourself just outside the zone, there’s no safe way to wait near the edge; it will kill you instantly.
Battlefield Studios has clearly put a lot of effort into making this battle royale feel rich and detailed, rather than just adding it as an afterthought. The map is packed with hidden secrets and information, and the gameplay focuses on more than just eliminating opponents. It still feels like classic Battlefield, meaning destruction is a key element – the trailer shows entire buildings being leveled. However, the map won’t be completely flat; some structures will remain durable, similar to what you’d expect in traditional multiplayer modes.
Classes are featured in this battle royale mode, but with some adjustments to better suit the gameplay. The Assault class, for example, retains its ladder ability – which could be even more useful here – and gains new benefits like faster armor repair, the power to fully heal teammates, and other enhancements. Players can also unlock improved gadgets through training, including a recon drone that can attack with bombs and an RPG that can be transformed into a guided missile.

In Battlefield REDSEC’s battle royale mode, winning isn’t just about being the last player alive. Each match includes missions – special tasks like targeting enemy squads or completing objectives – that offer powerful rewards and a competitive advantage. You can even earn rewards by stopping other players from completing their missions. Beyond objectives, you can also improve your squad’s gear by finding hidden safes and cracking them open with a repair torch to claim valuable items.
The best rewards in the game are keycards. These unlock access to powerful vehicles like tanks, which you can find in certain trailers and containers or earn through gameplay. However, even with a tank, victory isn’t guaranteed! Engineers can use rocket launchers and other anti-tank weapons, so you’ll still need to play carefully.
I’m really excited about being able to customize my gear! I can build a loadout exactly how I want, picking all the attachments for my favorite gun and getting ready for a fight. But it’s not just handed to me, I have to work for it. I can earn it by completing missions, or I can jump into a loadout drop event and try to snag one before anyone else does. The thing is, there aren’t enough drops for every squad, so it’s a race to get there first, and you might have to fight to keep what you find!
The team plans to continue updating Battlefield REDSEC in the future, though they aren’t sharing details about what those updates will be just yet. We don’t know if more maps or significant changes to how the game plays are planned, but this is only the start for this new game.
Battlefield Studios appears to have successfully integrated the classic Battlefield elements – destruction, teamwork based on different classes, and vehicle combat – into their new battle royale game. While we need to play it to be sure, all the key ingredients are present for what could be one of the best battle royale experiences available.
What Else Is Included in Battlefield REDSEC?

Battlefield REDSEC introduces a new battle royale experience on a fresh map, plus a new team-based mode called Gauntlet, and more content for Battlefield 6. It’s a good way to try out Battlefield 6 if you don’t already have it, letting you learn the gameplay and make progress in the full game. Beyond battle royale, Gauntlet is the biggest addition – it’s a unique PvP mode designed for players who aren’t fans of the battle royale style.
Gauntlet is a competitive mode where eight teams of four players battle it out on Fort Lyndon. Each round, teams complete different objectives while trying to outscore their opponents. Unlike traditional modes, you’re not eliminated by being killed – the team with the lowest score at the end of each round is removed from the game. This continues until only two teams remain, and they face off in a final showdown to determine the winner.
I’m really glad they added this! It means I can jump straight into Battlefield 6 without having to warm up with a slower, more limited-lives mode like battle royale. It would’ve been cool in Battlefield 6 anyway, but the fact that they’re making it totally free through Battlefield REDSEC is awesome.
Portal will be a key feature in Battlefield REDSEC. It lets players create their own unique gameplay experiences within the Fort Lyndon map. This means you can enjoy everything from wacky, player-made game modes to classic Battlefield matches like Conquest. It’s a great way to keep the game fresh with new content, even if you’re not a fan of battle royale.
How Does Progression in Battlefield REDSEC Work?

Your progress in Battlefield REDSEC and Battlefield 6 is connected. You’ll share the same battle pass and challenges across both games. While REDSEC will have some unique challenges, everything contributes to a single, unified progression system. There won’t be separate battle passes for each game – it’s all connected!
Today marks the beginning of a new era for Battlefield 6 with the release of Season 1, giving players a clear look at what’s coming. This is a large-scale project with the potential to greatly benefit the Battlefield community. It will not only expand the current gameplay with fresh content but also attract new players to the game. Everything indicates a bright future, establishing Battlefield 6 as a key competitor in the evolving live-service gaming landscape.
