An independent review discovered that the BBC violated their editorial standards when they didn’t make clear that the presenter in Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone was the child of a Hamas leader, as required by their guidelines.
The documentary was removed from BBC iPlayer in February following a report that uncovered significant issues during its production.
The investigation revealed that three individuals from the documentary’s production company, Hoyo Films, were cognizant of the father’s role during the initial airing, yet nobody at the BBC had this knowledge.
The evaluation was conducted primarily by Peter Johnson, head of editorial complaints and reviews, who pointed out that although there was no proof indicating that the narrator’s father or relatives had an impact on the program’s content, the use of child narration was deemed inappropriate.
The study concluded that an amount of £975 was remitted for the services of the narrator, this payment being made through his older sibling. Notably, this sum fell within the expected range of what could be considered fair under the given circumstances.
In response, BBC director general Tim Davie stated that Peter Johnston’s report highlights a substantial error regarding the accuracy of the documentary.
I appreciate his diligent work but regret the mistake. Now, we will tackle this issue from two angles: taking measures for fair, transparent, and just accountability, and swiftly putting in place steps to avoid similar errors in the future.
The BBC Board expressed gratitude towards Peter Johnston for his dedication. His investigation provides an extensive analysis of a intricate program that took several months to create, from its initial conception to airtime – it plays a pivotal role in uncovering the truth behind the events.
Trust and openness are paramount in our journalistic work. We appreciate the steps the management is taking to prevent such lapses from happening again in the future.
According to a recent announcement from Hoyo Films, they are treating the conclusions of the report with great urgency and have offered an apology for the error that led to a violation of the BBC’s editorial policies.
The report confirmed that no outside party exerted unwarranted control over the documentary’s content, which we are glad about.
The investigation’s thoroughness is acknowledged, along with its conclusions: Hoyo Films did not intentionally deceive BBC, no violations of editorial guidelines were found in the program aside from this incident, and there was no indication that the program’s funds were used improperly or for anything other than legitimate production expenses.
Today, Hoyo Films expresses gratitude for the suggestions within the report and hopes they’ll enhance our procedures and avert comparable issues down the line. Collaboratively, we’re engaging with the BBC to explore a suitable method for reinstating on iPlayer the narratives of those who graced the featured program.
In Gaza, our dedicated team courageously recorded the heartbreaking consequences of war on children, ensuring that their harrowing experiences are not forgotten. The book ‘Gaza: Enduring War’s Toll’ serves as an essential testimony, and it is crucial for the individuals who unwillingly bear witness to conflict but have no control over its causes, to share their perspectives.
