BBC confirms flurry of David Attenborough shows to celebrate icon’s 100th birthday – including exclusive new interviews and docs

To mark Sir David Attenborough turning 100 on May 8th, the BBC is releasing a collection of both new shows and classic programmes from his incredible 70-year career.

Next week, a series of new programs will be shown to celebrate the life and work of David Attenborough. These include ‘Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure,’ ‘Secret Garden,’ and ‘David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth.’

To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s birthday, BBC One will broadcast special episodes from his classic series. Plus, BBC iPlayer will feature a collection of over 40 series narrated by him.

“Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure” includes fresh interviews with David Attenborough and the people who created the original, revolutionary series, Life on Earth, as they share memories and insights about its production.

This documentary offers a captivating look behind the scenes of the series’ production, a time when television was rapidly evolving and international travel was still new. The filmmakers faced incredible difficulties, including political unrest like a coup in the Comoros, dangerous encounters with gunfire in Rwanda, and threats from Saddam Hussein’s forces in Iraq.

First broadcast in 1979 and seen by half a billion people around the world, this series cemented David’s place as the most accomplished and impactful wildlife filmmaker of his generation. His incredible experience with gorillas in the mountains of Rwanda, featured in the series, is often ranked among the greatest moments in television history.

Secret Garden is a new nature series coming to BBC One and iPlayer. Hosted by David Attenborough, it explores the surprising wildlife and hidden ecosystems flourishing in British gardens.

Over five episodes, and set in five gardens throughout the UK, Attenborough shows us the surprisingly charming, sometimes bold, and always elusive creatures living right around us.

Life isn’t easy for them, even in this lovely and peaceful setting. The harsh realities of the natural world still apply.

The series showcases the amazing variety of wildlife across the UK – from pine martens in the Scottish Highlands to dormice in Wales, and from swallows in the Lake District to otters in Oxfordshire and blue tits in Bristol. It also highlights how these creatures manage to thrive and live amongst us.

By talking to the gardeners who’ve created these amazing wildlife havens, we learn how people across Britain – with our love for animals and gardening – can help endangered species. Since 80% of British homes have gardens, and these gardens collectively cover more land than all our national nature reserves, what we do in our own backyards truly matters – for the animals living there and for wider populations.

Celebrate a century of David Attenborough’s incredible life and work with David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth, a special live event on BBC One and iPlayer. The celebration, held at the Royal Albert Hall, will feature performances by the BBC Concert Orchestra and appearances by special guests.

BBC One is hosting a special live event to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. The program will look back at his incredible career and a lifetime of exploring and revealing the wonders of the natural world, bringing the nation together to honor him.

The program will share compelling stories about wildlife, set to live music from the series. It will also include thoughtful commentary from prominent individuals who champion nature and conservation.

BBC One will honor Sir David Attenborough’s incredible career by showing classic episodes of his most popular shows. These include favorites like Planet Earth II, Seven Worlds, One Planet, Blue Planet II, Planet Earth III, Frozen Planet II, and his newest film, Wild London.

BBC iPlayer is creating a dedicated section on its homepage featuring over 40 of Sir David Attenborough’s most popular shows. This collection will include classics like Zoo Quest alongside his newer series, such as Kingdom, Parenthood, and Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster.

BBC Radio will also be marking Attenborough’s birthday with special content across its networks.
