BBC confirms schedule shake-up as Casualty set to take break

The BBC has announced changes to its Saturday night programming, and the popular show Casualty will be temporarily off the air.

The medical drama will be paused for two weeks to allow a new show to premiere.

The medical drama Casualty is nearing the end of its mini-series, Learning Curve, with just two episodes remaining. Viewers can catch the next installment on Saturday, April 11th at 8:30 PM.

The National Lottery’s Big Night of Musicals 2026 will be broadcast on BBC One at the same time as the usual showing of Casualty.

This show celebrates iconic West End musicals such as Wicked, Les Misérables, Matilda, and The Phantom of the Opera, and Jason Manford will be hosting.

The comedian, age 44, has hosted several BBC programs, such as A Question of Sport, The One Show, and Children in Need.

Manford has performed in several popular musical productions, including well-known shows like Sweeney Todd, The Producers, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Guys and Dolls, Curtains, and The Wizard of Oz, both in London’s West End and throughout the UK.

Casualty stopped broadcasting in September of last year and was off the air for five months before returning on January 10th.

In December, BBC Studios was confirmed as the continuing producer of the long-running drama Casualty. They won the contract after a bidding process that began in May, allowing other production companies to compete for the opportunity.

Having first aired in 1986, Casualty is the longest running primetime medical drama in the world.

The show used to have a spin-off called Holby City, which aired for more than 20 years, from 1999 to 2022.
