The privately financed site is said to attract over 60 million American viewers, functioning independently of the BBC’s British-based operations.

Previously, The Guardian had reported that the powers that be at BBC were contemplating a novel move – potentially asking their US-based audience to part with some funds, as early as this month. In this preliminary phase, guests can choose either a yearly subscription of $49.99 or a monthly one at $8.99. With these subscriptions, they will receive unrestricted access to our site’s content and live streaming of the BBC News channel.
