BBC Three confirms special Doctor Who night to celebrate 20 years of David Tennant in role

Good news for David Tennant fans! BBC Three is hosting a Doctor Who night to mark 20 years since he first played the Doctor, featuring encore showings of his recent 60th anniversary episodes.

Join us on Thursday, April 16, 2026, for Twenty Years of Tennant! The event will run from 7:05 PM until 12:30 AM the next day.

I was so excited to see David Tennant back as the Doctor! Along with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, they starred in three fantastic specials to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary: ‘The Star Beast,’ ‘Wild Blue Yonder,’ and ‘The Giggle.’ It was a brilliant return for both of them.

Next up is “Talking Doctor Who,” a documentary created for the show’s 60th anniversary. In it, David Tennant explores the history of the original “Doctor Who” series by looking through old footage and materials.

Following the specials, viewers can watch three episodes of Doctor Who: Unleashed, a behind-the-scenes show that takes a closer look at the making of the 60th anniversary episodes.

David Tennant first played the Tenth Doctor at the end of ‘The Parting of the Ways,’ during the Ninth Doctor’s regeneration. However, ‘The Christmas Invasion’ in 2005 was his first complete episode as the new Doctor.

The actor has played the character many times, especially during the 60th anniversary celebrations. He’s also going to be back in a new set of audio stories from Big Finish.

Despite some fans wanting to see him act again, Tennant had previously suggested a return to the screen was unlikely in an interview with TopMob.

He described the Doctor as being delighted, picturing him in a Chiswick garden with Bonnie Langford making him mac and cheese – a reference to the ending of ‘The Giggle’.

Just because the door isn’t fully closed doesn’t mean it’s not the end. With Doctor Who, there are always ways to bring characters back, so it feels like a final conclusion despite that possibility.

The famous actor also avoided speculating about what might happen if Earth were attacked while the Doctor was off on another adventure.

He jokingly responded, ‘You could just as easily ask, ‘Why hasn’t Patrick Troughton arrived yet?’ It doesn’t really make sense if you dwell on it. I’m done with the role! The Fourteenth Doctor is also finished!’

Last season ended with Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transforming into Billie Piper’s character, and the details of what her new role will be are still a mystery.

Doctor Who is coming back this Christmas and will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
