Beavis and Butt-Head Creator Mike Judge’s Political Satire Is a Must Watch And It Just Hit Netflix

The 2000s were a fantastic decade for movies, offering something for everyone. Blockbusters like *Iron Man* and *The Dark Knight* redefined the superhero genre, while fantasy fans enjoyed the first six *Harry Potter* films and the complete *Lord of the Rings* trilogy. Beyond those huge hits, films like *Kill Bill* and *Mean Girls* became iconic parts of pop culture. The decade also produced some lesser-known films that gained a dedicated following over time-and one of those is now streaming on Netflix.

Okay, so I’m a huge Mike Judge fan – the guy who brought us *Beavis and Butt-Head* – and his movie *Idiocracy* just hit Netflix! It originally came out way back in 2006 and honestly, it kind of flopped in theaters. But it’s a really funny sci-fi comedy with Luke Wilson, Maya Rudolph, Dax Shepard, Terry Crews, and a great cast, and it’s become a bit of a cult classic because it hilariously predicts a future where, well, not the smartest people are in charge. I’m so glad it’s easier to watch now!

What Is Idiocracy About?

The movie *Idiocracy* centers on Joe Bauers, an ordinary Army librarian, and Rita, a prostitute, who unexpectedly become part of a long-term government experiment involving suspended animation. Joe is selected because he’s statistically the most average person in the military-a true “average Joe.” Unfortunately, the project is abandoned, and they sleep for 500 years. When they wake up, they find a drastically changed America where the population has become significantly less intelligent, and Joe might be the country’s last hope.

When *Idiocracy* first came out, critics weren’t very impressed. Many didn’t fully understand the movie’s satirical humor, and it didn’t perform well in theaters. However, it quickly gained a dedicated fanbase, and this nearly 20-year-old comedy remains popular today.

Idiocracy Is a Movie You Can’t Watch Just Once

I keep coming back to *Idiocracy*, and honestly, that’s what makes it a classic. It’s weirdly timeless, even though it’s definitely a movie *of* its time. Every viewing reveals something new, but what really hits home are the themes. Misinformation, the obsession with brands and buying things, and just…too many people. It all feels eerily relevant, especially almost twenty years later. Joe’s journey still resonates, and frankly, it’s a little scary how much it does.

The movie *Idiocracy* continues to be surprisingly relevant and enjoyable with each viewing. Director Mike Judge, along with Ethan Cohen, filled the film with countless details, visual jokes, and background gags – so many, in fact, that it’s hard to notice them all in a single watch. This means viewers often discover something new each time, making it both a familiar and surprisingly fresh experience. And, of course, Terry Crews’ unforgettable performance as President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho is a major highlight.
