Before Captain America, Chris Evans Starred in a Forgotten DC Movie With Three Other Comic Book Legends

Chris Evans is best known for playing Captain America, a role that’s made him a superhero icon. However, before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he appeared in a lesser-known DC Comics film that boasted an incredibly talented cast. Evans’ Captain America is now considered one of the most memorable superhero performances of all time, alongside actors like Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Michael Keaton as Batman. But this wasn’t his first foray into comic book movies.

Released in 2010, The Losers is an action comedy inspired by the DC comic book series of the same name, created by writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock. The film reimagines The A-Team with a darker, more rebellious edge, following a US Special Forces team who are betrayed and left for dead. When a mysterious woman offers them a chance for revenge, they eagerly accept. Despite not performing well at the box office and receiving mixed reviews, The Losers boasts a fantastic cast, including Chris Evans, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldaña, and Idris Elba.

2010’s The Losers Has One of the Best Comic Book Movie Casts Ever

Besides Evans, The Losers also starred Morgan, Saldaña, and Elba, all of whom later became well-known for their roles in comic book movies. Morgan went on to appear in Watchmen, The Walking Dead, and Batman v Superman. Saldaña famously played Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, as well as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Elba played Heimdall in Thor just a year after The Losers, and continued in that role through Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

Idris Elba became a familiar face in comic book movies, appearing as Moreau in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad (2021). Chris Evans had already built a following among comic book fans before The Losers came out in 2010, thanks to his work in the Fantastic Four movies and TMNT (2007). However, it was his defining role as Steve Rogers that truly shaped his career.

The Losers Deserved Better Than Its Lukewarm Reception

Despite launching the careers of its stars, the movie The Losers never got the recognition it deserved. Similar to the 2006 film Smokin’ Aces, it was criticized for its over-the-top violence and stylish action. Ironically, those very qualities later became hallmarks of successful action movies like Atomic Blonde, Bullet Train, Nobody, and the John Wick series.

Quentin Tarantino enjoyed The Losers, and in retrospect, it’s a surprisingly good take on the action-team concept – even better than the 2010 A-Team movie. It’s also a stronger film than other works by the director, such as Stomp the Yard and Slender Man. Most importantly, The Losers deserves recognition for introducing a memorable cast who would later become famous as comic book heroes.
