Before Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Comments On The Destination X Winner, I Didn’t Realize How Much I Was Rooting For One Reality Star To Lose

Heed this notice: Detailed plot revelations lie ahead for the Season 1 finale of Destination X on NBC. You can watch it tomorrow if you have a Peacock streaming subscription.

The initial run of “Destination X” has concluded, and the finale unveiled secrets about loyalty and deceit that ultimately decided who would claim the $250,000 top award among contestants Rick Szabo, Biggy Bailey, and Peter Weber. I’ve enjoyed following along with each episode, especially since it followed fresh episodes of “America’s Got Talent,” but no installment grabbed me quite like the first one did when it initially tricked me in the 2025 TV lineup.

In simpler terms, I enjoyed cheering for Rick when he won due to recognizing Big Ben in London, and it’s delightful that a birdwatcher triumphed professionally. However, it wasn’t until reading comments from host Jeffrey Dean Morgan that I understood my joy for Rick stemmed more from wanting another competitor to lose, rather than supporting Rick genuinely – unfortunately, this other competitor, Pilot Pete, was the one I didn’t want to win!

To set the record straight, it wasn’t Peter Weber’s history on The Bachelor or The Traitors that led to my lack of support for him. Being well-known within Bachelor Nation doesn’t automatically turn someone into a geography expert, being removed from The Traitors Season 2 cast doesn’t make you a master cartographer, and working as a pilot doesn’t necessarily mean you can solve mysteries. Essentially, his background in reality TV didn’t particularly concern me.

Peter Weber ranked third among the three finalists for me primarily because of a significant advantage that wasn’t related to his appearances on ABC or Peacock reality shows. Namely, he was able to join “Destination X” partway through the season, thereby avoiding some early eliminations. My conclusion wasn’t formed after watching Rick’s jubilation in the final credits or listening to Peter’s emotional farewell speech, but rather following my reading of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s comments to Parade. He stated:

I want to acknowledge the excellent job done by our casting team. Moving forward, if we decide to make a Season 2, I’m leaning towards maintaining a balance between fresh faces and seasoned professionals. Additionally, similar to the approach of ‘Traitors’, it could be intriguing to invite reality show veterans for a sort of ‘all-star’ edition. However, I value the newcomers, those who are new to this experience. For instance, someone like Rick, a bird watcher from Canada who ended up winning the grand prize, adds an interesting twist. I ponder whether the audience would find it fair if Peter had joined in Episode 3 and then won the show.

In Episode 3, Peter Weber and JaNa Craig, a former contestant from Love Island USA, were among the two reality TV personalities who arrived late at Destination X. Although JaNa didn’t go far in the competition, Peter managed to reach the finale. Jeffrey Dean Morgan posed the question of whether it seemed fair if Peter had won the title; while I can’t speak for everyone, personally, I wouldn’t have considered it completely fair.

In essence, Morgan’s observation that familiar faces can enhance a show’s appeal, as demonstrated by “Deal or No Deal Island” with Boston Rob Mariano from “Survivor,” seems spot-on. Furthermore, the game of Destination X requires more than just understanding reality TV dynamics to succeed; contestants must also possess skills in identifying European locations. If everyone began at the same starting point, the playing field would have been fairer.

In summary, I’m in agreement if Destination X gets renewed and features reality TV stars similar to The Bachelor and Love Island veterans. However, it would be much more engaging if these celebrities had to start from scratch like everyone else. While Peter Weber was an enjoyable element during the final stages of Season 1 due to his secret alliance, I still believe it wouldn’t have been fair for him to win over Rick or Biggy.

If you’re eager to reexperience the thrilling journey of Season 1 from Destination X, you can catch the episodes on Peacock. It appears Jeffrey Dean Morgan is open to reprising his role for another season, given his recent explanation for accepting the hosting gig. The ratings for America’s Got Talent as its primetime companion were robust, so it wouldn’t shock me if NBC decided to revive the show as a popular summer series again.
