The initial season of HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” was highly lauded, garnering broad critical approval and substantial viewership. The series was commended for its authentic yet enriching interpretation of the popular video game, bolstered by compelling performances from its main actors. However, the second season sparked a divide among viewers. Although critics largely continued to praise the show, a noteworthy segment of fans expressed dissatisfaction with the narrative and character development of “The Last of Us”, leading to a noticeable drop in audience ratings and viewership when compared to the explosive debut season. Lead actress Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, acknowledges the criticism and offers a direct response to those displeased with the show’s second installment.
During my recent interview on The Awardist podcast, I expressed that there’s little I can do about audience reactions towards a show once it’s released. Changes and alterations are not an option at this point, so I find myself disengaged from critiques and reviews as they don’t influence the show’s progression or any of its aspects in any way. People are entitled to their opinions, but to me, they exist separately from the show itself.
Ramsey suggested a simple solution for those viewers who aren’t fond of the new season: “If you really dislike it, feel free to replay the game instead.” For those who still wish to watch it, he hopes they will find enjoyment in it.
Is Season 3 of The Last of Us in Trouble?
Regardless of the mixed responses to its second series, it seems that HBO’s commitment to The Last of Us remains unwavering. In fact, the network demonstrated such faith in the show by renewing it for a third season as early as April 2025, before the second season had even debuted. The creators, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, have been vocal about their long-term vision for the series, hinting that adapting the intricate storyline of the second game, The Last of Us Part II, may necessitate more than one season. Mazin has even speculated that the show might span up to four seasons to fully come alive.
The creative team behind “The Last of Us” is experiencing a major transition. Neil Druckmann, who collaborated on the series and played a crucial role in the video game series, has moved on from his creative responsibilities for the show to focus on other ventures at Naughty Dog, his gaming studio. Moreover, co-writer Halley Gross has also parted ways. As a result, Craig Mazin is now the sole showrunner.
Mazin has assured fans that Druckmann’s departure won’t disrupt their pre-planned future seasons, as the roadmap for subsequent seasons was mapped out during their collaboration on Season 2. He also confirmed that Season 3 will be larger and longer than the seven-episode second season. Contrary to rumors, Mazin has no plans to extend the show beyond the existing games. Currently, scripts for the upcoming installment are being written, with a scheduled release in 2027. Despite some creative changes, the narrative of Ellie and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) will continue its journey under new leadership.
