Beloved Doctor Who companion gives his verdict on that huge Billie Piper twist

Arthur Darvill, who previously played a companion on Doctor Who, has shared his thoughts on the big surprise return of Billie Piper to the show last season.

After Ncuti Gatwa finished his run as the Fifteenth Doctor, the Doctor regenerated into a familiar face: the actress who previously played Rose Tyler. However, she wasn’t listed as the Doctor, so fans are now wondering exactly what her new role will be.

I recently listened to Arthur Darvill, who played Rory on Doctor Who, on the TopMob podcast. He was asked about Billie Piper potentially returning as the Doctor, and he seemed really enthusiastic! He said she’s a fantastic actress and that if she did become the Doctor, it would be an amazing decision. I definitely agree – she’s incredibly talented!

Mark Gatiss, known as Darvill, is launching a podcast where he’ll rewatch classic episodes of Doctor Who and reconnect with his former co-star, Karen Gillan, who played Amy Pond. He also discussed the show’s future, noting that the BBC’s agreement with Disney has concluded.

He paused thoughtfully. “It’s a fascinating topic right now. I haven’t fully explored the details, and I’m sure everyone has strong feelings about what happened with Disney and whether it was successful.”

I haven’t seen much of it, honestly. But I imagine it will continue indefinitely, which is great. It explores themes of change, the cycle of life and death, and the idea of renewal – something new emerging from the past.

I believe this story will endure. My hope is that it stays true to its essence – a heartfelt tale about people who don’t quite fit in, celebrating individuality and acceptance. It also explores complex issues and the often-gray areas between good and evil.

There’s really no limit to the number of stories you can create. Just look at how much Doctor Who content exists – books, fan fiction, and more – it proves the possibilities are truly endless.

Casting a new actor in that role immediately sparks a lot of fresh ideas and potential storylines. There are many talented actors who could bring that character to life.

“It would be silly to not carry it on and keep changing it and see other people’s takes on it.”

Arthur Darvill’s full interview will be published later this month.
