In the realm of shojo manga, the fantasy romance series “Yona of the Dawn,” written by Mizuho Kusanagi, is considered one of the greatest. It first appeared in 2009 in Hana to Yume magazine as a monthly feature. The series also received an anime adaptation by Pierrot in 2014, which gained widespread acclaim. Yet, more than a decade later, the animation studio has yet to announce a follow-up, leaving fans hopeful for a continuation. The narrative revolves around Yona, a former princess who witnessed her father’s assassination and was forced to flee the castle by her childhood love, Soo-Won. Overwhelmed by the trauma, Yona could only call for help from her loyal bodyguard, Hak, who barely succeeded in escaping with her from the castle.
Following the tragic loss of her last relative and her home, Yona finds herself engulfed in despair. Yet, with Hak’s unwavering encouragement, she embarks on a fresh path, defying adversity, amassing new companions, and safeguarding a kingdom that was once an enigma to her. Over time, this captivating tale has progressed significantly, leading us to the brink of its climactic conclusion. Although the exact date for the manga’s final chapter hasn’t been set, we may soon say our goodbyes within the next year or so. However, as the story was about to reach its grand finale, it took everyone by surprise with an unexpected break in its narrative.

In most instances, fresh chapters of this manga are published in either the first or second week of each monthly issue in the Hana to Yume magazine (Japanese time zone). Following Chapter 271’s release in the July issue, the series will temporarily halt and resume with Chapter 272 on October 3rd, 2025. Unfortunately, at this moment, there are no officially authorized platforms available for reading the manga monthly within North America. However, you can purchase physical or digital copies directly from Viz’s official website. Currently, their English library consists of 44 volumes, while Japan has released a total of 46 volumes to date.
Typically, an English edition of a volume comes out after a year. Since Volume 45 came out in December of last year, it’s likely that we’ll see another volume by the end of 2025. Notably, Volume 46 was released in June 2025. The anticipated final volume, Volume 47, is speculated to be published in Spring 2026 and will feature a 64-page art book in A5 size as an extra treat.
What Is Happening in the Final Arc of Yona of the Dawn?
The climactic phase of Yona’s journey takes place as she goes back to the Kingdom of Kouka, where she grapples with reconciling her relationships with those close to her. This phase opens up by revealing Zeno’s internal battles, a being who has been plagued for centuries by the weight of immortality beneath his jovial demeanor. Hidden under his cheerful exterior, Zeno has endured endless pain, loss, and solitude. He is convinced that the cycle of the dragons’ rebirth should conclude with this generation, and in order to achieve that, he makes a treacherous move against Yona and her companions. In an effort to restore the powers of the Four Dragon Warriors to the heavens and end his own existence, Zeno seals himself and the other warriors inside the Chalice of the Four Dragons’ Blood.
Instead, Yona dives into the chalice to shield Zeno from having to sacrifice himself. Simultaneously, Hak and Soo-Won are busy outside, working on deciphering the mysteries of the Chalice and readying themselves for future events. Nevertheless, even though she’s the reborn King Hiryuu, the first ruler of the Kouka Kingdom, Yona can’t convince the dragon deities to release their captive warriors. The situation worsens when Hak finds himself in grave danger, forcing Yona to confront a tough decision.
The tale concludes as it resolves the struggle with the divine dragons. Moreover, this seems to be the opportune moment for the prophecy to come true, as foretold by the oracle. Earlier in the story, we were told that the “sword and the shield,” destined to safeguard the king, would only manifest after the four dragons had been summoned. As of now, we remain unaware of their nature, though speculations about their identities abound. When they are awakened, the Red Dragon will bring back the dawn, thus concluding Yona’s adventure.
