Beloved Sci-Fi Series Is Getting a Fifth Entry That Completely Rewrites the Original

The Harry Potter books sparked a renewed interest in reading in the early 2000s. By the following decade, book series, especially those aimed at young adults, became incredibly popular and were quickly adapted into major Hollywood films and TV shows. Publishers invested heavily in authors with established fan bases, turning series like The Hunger Games and Twilight into big-budget franchises. This led to numerous young adult authors landing deals for film and television adaptations, with The Divergent Series becoming one of the most well-known examples.

Fifteen years after the original Divergent series ended, author Veronica Roth is revisiting the world with a sixth book, set to be released in October. But this won’t be a traditional sequel! The Sixth Faction will reimagine the first Divergent novel, exploring an alternate universe within the series, a popular trend in storytelling right now.

What Is Divergent: The Sixth Faction About?

The Divergent series takes place in a futuristic world where society is divided into five groups based on people’s personalities and abilities at age sixteen. The story follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who is considered “divergent” because she shows qualities of multiple groups and doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. Those who don’t fit into any faction are cast to the bottom of society, so Tris is told to hide her true identity. She pretends to be from the selfless Abnegation group and joins the brave Dauntless. The novels follow Tris as she tries to keep her secret while uncovering a plot by the intellectual Erudite faction to take control and eliminate anyone who doesn’t conform. Tris and her friends start a rebellion, battling various groups to build a society that accepts everyone, regardless of their differences.

In the third book, Allegiant, Tris tragically dies while defending against a poison gas attack led by David, the leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare – the organization responsible for creating the faction system as a social experiment. Her partner, Tobias “Four” Eaton, ultimately defeats David and witnesses the beginning of a new society. However, the movie adaptation of Allegiant only covered the first half of the book. Plans for a fourth film, Ascendant, were initially made, but the project was later changed into a TV series that was eventually canceled.

The upcoming book, The Sixth Faction, offers a fresh take on the Divergent story. This time, Beatrice (Tris) won’t join the Dauntless faction, and that single change will dramatically impact her journey and the story’s outcome.

Many young adult (YA) authors from the 2010s have revisited their popular series. For example, Stephanie Meyer, author of Twilight, rewrote her novel from the vampire Edward’s point of view, and Suzanne Collins, who wrote The Hunger Games, has been releasing prequel novels that are quickly becoming new movies. However, Veronica Roth is taking a unique approach with a story set in an alternate universe. It makes you wonder if this new world of The Sixth Faction will ever connect with the original Divergent universe, and we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
