Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are a well-known duo in Hollywood. They’ve collaborated on many films over the years, first gaining recognition for writing the award-winning screenplay for 1997’s Good Will Hunting, which earned them an Academy Award. Now, after a three-year break, they’re reuniting for a new thriller on Netflix, and the story is based on real events.
Currently available on Netflix, The Rip features Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Miami detectives JD Byrne and Dane Dumars. They stumble upon millions of dollars in cash, and the discovery creates suspicion and distrust as word gets out. This forces them to question everyone around them, even their colleagues. The film is directed and written by Joe Carnahan, who drew inspiration from the real-life experiences of a friend working as a narcotics officer in Miami.
The Rip Is Inspired By Real-Life Experience With a 70s Cop Thriller Vibe
Although police stories and thrillers often appear together in movies and TV shows, director Gavin O’Connor explained to Netflix that the idea for this one came from a real-life experience a friend had. He also drew inspiration from well-known 1970s police thrillers, such as Serpico, and the 1990s film Heat.
Director Carnahan explained that his film, The Rip, was inspired by a close friend’s life – both as a father and as a leader in the Miami Dade police department’s narcotics division. He also drew inspiration from classic 1970s cop thrillers, like Serpico, Prince of the City, and more recently, Michael Mann’s Heat, which prioritized strong characters and realistic relationships.
The cast of The Rip includes Steven Yeun, known from Minari and The Walking Dead, along with Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another), Sasha Calle (who played Supergirl in The Flash), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Catalina Sandino Moreno (From, The Bridge), Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight), Lina Esco, and Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning). This film marks the first project resulting from a partnership between Netflix and Artists Equity, a production company created by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in 2022.
The Rip is now streaming on Netflix.
