Ben Affleck Says Son Samuel Affleck Asked for Sports Betting Money

Samuel Affleck was hoping to capitalize on Ben Affleck‘s goodwill.

When his 13-year-old son asked for money to gamble, the Academy Award-winning actor immediately refused, shocked by the request.

Ben recently told Jimmy Kimmel that his son asked him for $100 about a month ago to bet on sports. Ben said he was shocked by the request.

I was chatting with my youngest the other day, and it really struck me how quickly things change for kids these days. He mentioned his friends are getting allowances – a hundred dollars, actually! – but with a catch: lose it, and that’s it. It was a really interesting observation, and a reminder of how different things are now compared to when I was growing up.

Ben, who is also a father to Violet, 20, and Seraphina, 17, with the actress from 13 Going On 30, was surprised by what his son asked.

He imitated someone saying, ‘Wow, that’s a solid prediction – really thoughtful!’ then added with emphasis, ‘So you don’t come running back later saying, ‘I was sure Green Bay would score more points in the second half!”

Ben Affleck jokingly blamed his father, Timothy Affleck, who used to be a bookmaker, saying, “That explains why your grandfather had no money!”

For Ben, gambling was a big part of his and younger brother Casey Affleck‘s childhood.

My dad worked at a bar, but he mostly earned money as a small-time bookmaker, he told Jimmy Kimmel. He remembers when his family got their first washing machine and VCR, and his dad would jokingly say, ‘You can thank Steve Grogan for this!’ – Grogan was the Patriots’ quarterback at the time.

He explained that people consistently bet on the Patriots to cover the point spread. He was thankful the Patriots were a bad team, jokingly attributing their poor performance to Steve Grogan’s knee injuries, which allowed him to afford a VCR.

But it wasn’t lost on the 53-year-old that the gig wasn’t above board.

He described it as completely illegal, even criminal. Then, jokingly, he added that because enough time had passed, he wouldn’t get in trouble – and apologized to his father.

Ben wasn’t surprised by Samuel’s recent unusual request. Samuel had asked for something expensive before – once, he wanted $6,000 sneakers.

During an April appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends, actor Ben Affleck remembered a recent conversation with his son. His son wanted a pair of expensive shoes, and when asked how he planned to pay for them, Ben jokingly recalled responding, “Are you going to get a job mowing lawns? Do you even have $6,000?” Although his son argued they had the funds, Ben playfully told him, “I’ve got the money – you’re the one who’s broke!”

The father of three explained that it’s important to teach his children about money and not give them unlimited access to it.

He’s starting to understand the situation now,” he said. “He realized he doesn’t have any really expensive shoes—he has shoes, just not the super fancy kind—and I told him, ‘If you want those, you’ll have to work for them.’ I meant he could earn the money by working about 1,000 hours at minimum wage. And after putting in that much work, he might not even want to spend it all on sneakers.
