Ben-Hur 1959 Film Restored In 4K Ultra HD: Exclusive Clip & Release Details

The classic 1959 film by William Wyler, Ben-Hur, is being released in 4K resolution for the first time ever. Ebaster is excited to share a sneak peek at some of the bonus content. Starring Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur, the movie tells the story of a Jewish prince seeking revenge against his former friend, Messala (played by Stephen Boyd), in AD 26 after a devastating betrayal.

Both Ben-Hur and the classic film All the President’s Men are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital platforms like Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Fandango at Home on February 17th. Warner Bros. Discovery will release both films in 4K on the same day.

The Ben-Hur 4K and digital releases include several special features, including “Ben-Hur: Anatomy of an Epic,” “The Cinematography of Scale,” “Charlton Heston & Ben-Hur: A Personal Journey,” “Ben-Hur: The Making of an Epic” and “Ben-Hur: A Journey Through Pictures.”

The collection also features screen tests with actors like George Baker, William Russell, Leslie Nielsen (with both Cesare Danova and Yale Wexler), and Haya Narareet. You’ll also find a makeup test, a commentary track with film historian T. Gene Hacher and Charlton Heston (in two parts), and a music-only track of Miklós Rózsa’s award-winning score.

Ebaster received a video clip from “The Cinematography of Scale.” The clip features film historian Tony Maietta, K.J. Relth-Miller, the Director of Film Programming at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and Tommy Rose from Panavision discussing the advanced technology used in the film’s production. The movie features Charlton Heston alongside a talented cast including David Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Hugh Griffith, Haya Harareet, Cathy O’Donnell, Martha Scott, and Sam Jaffe.

When Ben-Hur came out in 1959, it was a huge financial success. Based on the novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ and a previous 1925 silent movie, it earned $146.9 million despite costing only $15.2 million to make.

Both audiences and critics are calling the film a masterpiece. On Rotten Tomatoes, Ben-Hur is ‘Certified Fresh’ with high ratings from both critics (87%) and viewers (89%).

The awards season was incredibly successful for Ben-Hur, which won a total of 11 Oscars. These included major awards like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Charlton Heston), Best Supporting Actor (Gregory Peck), and recognition for its art direction, cinematography, costumes, film editing, sound, music, and special effects.

Only three films – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Titanic, and Ben-Hur – have ever won that many Academy Awards.

At the Golden Globes, the film received three awards: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor (awarded to Boyd).

Released in 1959, Ben-Hur is considered a culturally and historically important film and has been preserved by the U.S. Library of Congress’s National Film Registry.

Ben-Hur was remade in 2016, though it failed to make the same impact.

This film, starring Heston, has been released on physical media several times, starting with laserdisc in 1993. It was then released on DVD in 2001, 2002, and 2005, followed by a fully restored version on both DVD and Blu-ray in 2011 to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The classic movie Ben-Hur has remained popular for 66 years, and in February 2026, fans will finally be able to experience it in stunning 4K resolution.
