How did you get this role?
In simpler terms,
My representative informed me that Steven Spielberg wanted to work with me on a project. Before he finished his sentence, I agreed four times. Then, I learned that Chris Columbus would be directing and I was extremely excited. I spent a lot of time searching online to discover the nature of the project, but it wasn’t until the very last moment that I found out it was The Thursday Murder Club. To my surprise, I hadn’t read the book before, and I thought it sounded charming.
You’re 81 — is it pleasantly surprising when all the lead roles are played by senior citizens?
In my opinion, it’s not surprising given my background in Shakespeare and portraying Gandhi throughout his entire life, from his twenties to eighties. The broad spectrum of life, our journey on this Earth, is commemorated by embracing all aspects – even the less favorable facets of aging. I believe that mortality should always be a recurring theme in stories that delve into the human experience.
Do egos and styles clash when big-name actors come together?
In a more simplified and conversational manner: Ensemble pieces are an important part of acting, as they allow actors to truly exercise their skills. One of my role models, Spencer Tracy, once said, “Make the other person shine,” which is quite different from what some acting coaches teach today, who tell students they must “dominate the scene.” This isn’t about competition or personal glory; it’s about collaboration and working together effectively. During filming, Pierce and I often switched between supporting each other as part of a quartet, and then splitting into duos where we complemented each other beautifully – much like Laurel and Hardy. It was a wonderful realization for both of us, I believe.
Ibrahim is the quietest of the four Murder Club sleuths — were you taken by him?
I have a deep affection for him and hold him in high regard, as he only speaks when necessary. He’s not just kind-hearted but also modest, with an ego well-balanced. However, it’s undeniable that he possesses remarkable skills as a psychiatrist. If given the opportunity, I would gladly don his bow tie once more.
