Benedict Cumberbatch to Star In 4 Major Movies Before Doctor Strange 3 (Confirmed)

Since finishing work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch has stayed incredibly busy. He’s already starred in or led seven films, consistently choosing prominent roles outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with four more big projects on the way before Doctor Strange 3, fans will have plenty of chances to see his work, even as they eagerly await his return as the Sorcerer Supreme.

Benedict Cumberbatch is likely to remain a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years to come, but Marvel Studios is being careful about which characters get their own follow-up movies at the moment.

Even though movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were popular, the studio isn’t rushing to make sequels. They’re focusing instead on two new Avengers films and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is being made with Sony Pictures.

Disney is now prioritizing big team-up movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026 and 2027, shifting away from stories focused on single heroes.

Fans really want a Doctor Strange 3, and it’s often talked about, but Marvel hasn’t officially announced that it’s happening yet.

Cumberbatch continues to be very busy with upcoming projects, including another appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange, though he won’t be starring in his own film this time.

The 4 Big Benedict Cumberbatch Movies Releasing Before Doctor Strange 3

Avengers: Doomsday

Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Doctor Strange could still appear in Avengers: Doomsday. We last saw him at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness traveling to the Dark Dimension with Clea (Charlize Theron) to fix a problem he created, and Marvel hasn’t revealed what happened next.

Despite rumors, Cumberbatch has consistently promised fans that Doctor Strange’s story isn’t over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s directly said the character will return and that audiences will absolutely see him again. He’s also suggested his comeback might be closely tied to the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie. He implies that Doctor Strange’s lack of presence in promotional materials for Doomsday is a deliberate choice, and doesn’t mean he’ll have a smaller part in the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.

Doctor Strange is a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s exploration of the multiverse, especially because he’s personally dealt with the dangerous phenomenon of incursions. He’s expected to join the Avengers, either during the events of Avengers: Doomsday or in a bigger role in Secret Wars.

Blood on Snow

Benedict Cumberbatch is starring in the upcoming thriller Blood on Snow, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and adapted from a novel by Jo Nesbo. He takes on the role of The Fisherman, after Tom Hardy had to leave the project due to his busy schedule.

Now that filming is finished, Blood on Snow is a notable project for the actor outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Wife & Dog

Benedict Cumberbatch is also set to star in Wife & Dog, a darkly humorous film written and directed by Guy Ritchie.

I’m really excited about this new film! From what I’ve gathered, it’s going to be a lot like Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen – think fast-talking, stylish, and set amongst the upper class in Britain. They’re keeping the story itself pretty secret, but it sounds like Benedict Cumberbatch will be right at home in that world – a clever, competitive, and beautifully presented one, if The Gentlemen is anything to go by.

Rogue Male

Benedict Cumberbatch is still dedicated to bringing Rogue Male to the screen. It’s a project he’s been developing for a long time through his production company, SunnyMarch, and he plans to both star in and produce the adaptation of Geoffrey Household’s 1939 novel. He’s noted the book was a significant inspiration for the James Bond series.

I was listening to the SmartLess podcast, and Benedict Cumberbatch mentioned they’re hoping to start filming sometime in 2026. He did add, though, that his other projects might shift things around a bit, so it’s not set in stone.

Bonus: Morning

Benedict Cumberbatch is also involved with Morning, a sci-fi drama that was revealed in 2022, though its current production status is unclear.

Benedict Cumberbatch was originally cast in a smaller role, playing the deceased husband of Laura Dern’s character. The movie is about a future world where people no longer need to sleep.

The project initially gained attention, but it hasn’t been released to the public yet. It’s currently unknown if it’s still being developed, or if it will come out before Doctor Strange 3.
