Benson Boone wants the world to respect his whimsical dessert.
Singer-songwriter American Heart jokingly referenced his song “Mystical Magic,” which is about love and inspired by his favorite ice cream flavor, after it wasn’t nominated for a Grammy Award in February 2026.
Benson expressed his surprise on Instagram Stories November 10th that the song ‘moonbeam ice cream’ wasn’t nominated for a Grammy, calling it “pure lyrical genius” while speaking directly to his followers.
The phrase “Mystical Magical” quickly became a popular meme after the former American Idol contestant first shared a snippet of the song’s chorus on TikTok in April. Many listeners were confused by the reference to the candy, and it sparked jokes about the lyrics. However, the singer embraced the attention and later revealed that songwriter Jack LaFrantz playfully came up with the line while they were recording in the studio.
The 23-year-old explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that he collaborates with someone named Jack on almost all of his writing. He described how Jack will often suggest ideas, saying, ‘He just goes, ‘What if you did this?’ It’s funny because it sounds like he’s about to offer something brilliant, and then he’ll say something completely random, like, ‘Moonbeam ice cream, taking off your blue jeans!’
Benson was surprised by Jack’s idea, explaining that he initially used the lyric as a temporary stand-in before realizing how much he actually liked it.
He remembered going home and listening to the recording. He said his immediate reaction to hearing about ‘Moonbeam ice cream’ was an enthusiastic, “Absolutely!”

Despite not being nominated for a Recording Academy award on November 7th, the artist did receive recognition in a unique way: a custom “Moonbeam Ice Cream” flavored Crumbl cookie was created in his honor.
