Berserk fans have certainly faced challenges, mirroring the often-difficult journey within the series itself. The franchise has experienced some tough times recently. After the heartbreaking loss of creator Kentaro Miura, many thought the story of Guts and the Band of the Hawk would end unfinished. However, writer Kouji Mori and the artists at Studio Gaga stepped in to continue the work, offering a glimmer of hope. The last completely new Berserk anime aired in 2017, followed by the Berserk: Memorial Edition compilation. With no new anime currently planned, many studios would be capable of taking on the project and bringing the series back to life.
When it comes to anime studios that have adapted Berserk, the list isn’t very long. The first adaptation was created by Studio OLM, which is perhaps more famous for the Pokemon anime. After that 1997 release, Berserk didn’t appear as an anime for quite a while, until the film trilogy started in 2012. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc was animated by Studio 4C and served as the basis for the recent Memorial Edition. As for the 2016 Berserk anime-which has gained a somewhat negative reputation-Studio GEMBA handled the animation for both seasons. Clearly, there are many studios capable of creating a new anime version of Berserk.
10.) Wit Studio
Although Wit Studio is famous for cheerful anime like Spy x Family and The Ranking of Kings, they’re also capable of creating very dark and serious content. They produced the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, a famously grim anime, as well as other mature series such as Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and The Suicide Squad Isekai. Because of this, Wit Studio could be a great fit for adapting the story of the Band of the Hawk. Their energetic animation style and talent for building immersive fantasy worlds could make them one of the best studios to bring Guts’ story to life.
9.) TRIGGER
Studio TRIGGER has become well-known for creating incredibly energetic anime, while also telling stories that are emotionally impactful. Shows like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Kill la Kill, and Little Witch Academia successfully blended exciting action with heartfelt moments, a style that would suit the character of the Black Swordsman. Furthermore, TRIGGER’s Delicious in Dungeon establishes a medieval setting that shares a similar visual feel with the world of the Band of the Hawk. This studio has consistently produced quality anime and would be an excellent choice to bring the world of Berserk to life.
8.) Powerhouse Animation Studio
This North American animation studio has become well-known for adapting popular Netflix series, including Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, Masters of The Universe: Revelation, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and others. The studio is no stranger to intense action and violence, demonstrated in several of these shows, and they’ve also created many supernatural beings reminiscent of the work of Berserk creator Kentaro Miura. Given that Castlevania producer Adi Shankar is reportedly interested in reimagining the Band of the Hawk, Powerhouse Animation Studio seems like a natural fit to tackle this grim anime franchise. Having already explored dark themes in their previous projects, they would be right at home in the world of the Black Swordsman.
7.) Madhouse
Recently recognized for its work on Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Studio Madhouse has been a significant force in the anime industry for many years. The studio actually began its work before Kentaro Miura started creating characters like Guts, Griffith, and Casca. Madhouse has experience with many popular anime series, including Hunter x Hunter, Trigun, One-Punch Man, and others. The studio often tackles stories with intense action and complex themes, as seen in titles like Hellsing Ultimate, Perfect Blue, Wicked City, and X. While Frieren has a more relaxed storytelling approach, its visual style shares similarities with Berserk’s overall atmosphere, demonstrating why Madhouse would be a strong choice to revive that darker anime series.
6.) Production I.G.
Production I.G. is a highly respected anime studio, famous for series like Ghost In The Shell, Haikyu, and Psycho-Pass. They’ve also tackled projects such as Blood-C, Uzumaki, and Noblesse – titles that combine dramatic narratives with intense, often disturbing, imagery and violence. This experience makes Production I.G. a strong candidate to adapt Berserk, and they could be ideal for bringing Guts and his companions back to animation.
5.) Ufotable
While Ufotable first gained recognition with anime such as Fate/Zero, God Eater, and Tales of Symphonia, it was Demon Slayer that truly established the studio’s reputation. The popular shonen series, thanks to Ufotable’s dedication, has produced some of the highest-grossing anime films of all time, earning hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide. As Demon Slayer nears its conclusion with a new trilogy, Ufotable may be searching for its next big project, and Berserk would be an excellent choice. Ufotable has proven its ability to vividly animate terrifying creatures in shonen anime, and it also has experience with the horror genre, having adapted Junji Ito’s Gyo, which featured creatures emerging from the ocean. Ufotable would be well-suited to bring Kentaro Miura’s dark and gritty world to life.
4.) Studio BONES
Currently, Studio BONES is widely recognized for My Hero Academia, particularly with the recent premiere of its eighth and final season. However, this production company boasts a broad range of anime titles. A prime example of a series that skillfully combined intense action with emotionally powerful and mature themes is Fullmetal Alchemist. Having successfully brought the tragic story of the Elric Brothers to life, BONES would be an excellent choice to adapt the Band of the Hawk and their incredibly moving adventure. Beyond My Hero Academia and Fullmetal Alchemist, BONES has also created series such as Gachiakuta, Bungo Stray Dogs, Mob Psycho 100, Space Dandy, and many more. BONES has firmly established itself in anime history, and deserves the opportunity to tell the story of Guts.
3.) Studio Pierrot
Similar to other studios featured here, Studio Pierrot has become a major player thanks to its ability to handle a wide range of series, whether they’re shonen or something else. Recently, the studio has been busy with Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, an action-packed supernatural show that aims to conclude the story of the Soul Society. When it comes to shonen anime, Pierrot is responsible for popular titles like Naruto, Black Clover, and Yu Yu Hakusho. However, they also created one series with a darkness that rivals Berserk’s style. In 2014, Pierrot adapted Tokyo Ghoul, and Ken Kaneki’s story is often as grim as that of Guts. While Pierrot is celebrated for its biggest shonen hits, they haven’t hesitated to tackle more mature anime adaptations, making them a great fit for Berserk.
2.) David Production
Although the team behind the anime of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure hasn’t created many series similar to Berserk, their past work speaks for itself. Besides animating the Joestar family’s story, David Production has demonstrated a lively and dynamic style with shows like Cells At Work, Fire Force, Undead Unluck, and others. A key reason why David Production could be a great choice for Berserk is their commitment to long-running projects, consistently supporting a series until its completion. Given the extensive amount of manga content that needs adaptation from Guts’ story, it would be logical for a production company to fully immerse itself in Kentaro Miura’s universe.
1.) MAPPA
Among all the anime studios currently working, Studio MAPPA is arguably the busiest-and perhaps most appropriately suited-to tackle Berserk. The studio has become well-known for its darker series, including Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, Hell’s Paradise, and Chainsaw Man. The monsters featured in each of these shows would feel right at home alongside Berserk’s apostles. Despite having a lot on its schedule, MAPPA consistently delivers high-quality work. Considering all the options, MAPPA seems like the strongest contender to revive the Band of the Hawk on screen.
