While everyone anticipates learning what happens to Guts after his betrayal by the Kushan Empire, a piece of artwork created using artificial intelligence has caused a stir online. This incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the use of AI in the anime and manga world.

A social media account on X recently shared artwork claiming it was chapter 384 of the manga Berserk, but fans quickly pointed out that this is false – the next chapter hasn’t been released yet. The user appears to have used artificial intelligence to create the images, which show a younger Guts revisiting memories. As of now, the publisher of Berserk, Young Animal, hasn’t addressed the situation, but fans are working to debunk the misinformation caused by this AI-generated art.

Which Way Berserk And A.I.?

The anime industry has been resistant to the use of artificial intelligence, and the Nippon Anime and Film Culture Association has actively opposed it for years. In 2024, the organization explained their concerns: they believe AI-generated content makes it difficult for creators to earn fair compensation. For example, if AI combines elements from popular characters like Doraemon, Gundam, and Son Goku, the NAFCA doesn’t want to allow its use even if royalties are paid. They argue that even if a creation based on 100 different characters becomes highly profitable, there’s currently no reliable way to ensure the original creators receive proper credit and a share of the earnings.

The future of Berserk is uncertain. There’s no news about when the next manga chapter will be released, or if a new anime series is planned. However, the creator, Kouji Mori, and Studio Gaga are developing new stories focusing on the Band of the Hawk and a coming war between the Kushan Empire and Griffith’s kingdom. The last chapter left Guts trapped in an inescapable cave, creating a very tense situation for fans.
