Best Fallout 4 mods: How to get multiplayer mod and more

Like any self-respecting Fallout game, Fallout 4 is perhaps best enjoyed with mods.

With the popular Fallout TV show currently airing its second season and the next-gen update for Fallout 4 released a while back, now is the perfect time to start adding mods to your game.

You can always use cheats in Fallout 4, but mods offer much bigger changes – they let you completely transform the game world!

If you’re interested in adding mods to Fallout 4, here’s a guide on how to do it, along with some of our top recommendations.

How to use mods in Fallout 4

Mods for Fallout 4 from the developer Bethesda can be downloaded from its official website.

As a fan, I’ve found installing mods super easy! You just click ‘Add to library’ and then launch the game after it’s done downloading – that’s it!

You can also find mods on websites like Nexus Mods. After you’ve chosen a mod, download the files and save them in an easy-to-find location on your computer, like a special folder you create for mods.

Okay, so after that, you’ll need to get a mod manager set up and sign in with your account. Then, you just head to your downloads, make sure the mods you want are actually turned on, and you’re good to go – you can launch Fallout 4 like normal!

If you’re playing on consoles like the Xbox Series X, you can download mods directly within the game using a special menu, though the selection isn’t as extensive as on other platforms.

Best Fallout 4 mods

Fallout 4 has a huge number of mods available, and it can be hard to know which ones are worth checking out. Here’s a list of some of the best to get you started.

Multiplayer

Let me tell you, exploring a ruined world like in Fallout 4 is scary stuff! It’s way more comforting to have a friend with you while you’re dodging radiation and fighting off enemies. The problem is, all the older mods that let you play with others online have basically disappeared – the people who made them aren’t updating or supporting them anymore, which is a real bummer.

The Building Bridges mod lets players communicate by leaving notes for each other, similar to how it works in games like Elden Ring. While it’s not the same as playing with a friend directly, it’s a great way to share helpful tips and information.

Armorsmith Extended

With over 10 million downloads, the Fallout 4 mod created by Gambit77 is incredibly popular with players around the world. It’s become the top choice for many due to its extensive features and improvements.

This mod significantly improves the game by letting you equip more armor and clothing, even layering clothes under your armor. You can also craft all types of power armor and customize almost any weapon or clothing item to your liking. It completely changes how the game is played and is a must-have for many players.

Change field of view

Some players find the limited field of view frustrating, and it can occasionally cause visual issues in Fallout 4. This mod lets you adjust the field of view, especially when you’re in power armor or interacting with terminals.

Lucy MacLean (Fallout TV Show)

Now you can play as Lucy MacLean, the main character from the Fallout TV series, thanks to a mod created by VaultGirl2077 and xMakeDamnSurex. It’s a great way to continue the experience after watching the show on Amazon Prime Video.

Buzz Lightyear

Paladin Danse is a companion from the Brotherhood of Steel, and he’s known for being very strict. However, you can actually make him a bit more cheerful by having him wear the outfit of Buzz Lightyear, the popular toy astronaut!

Okay, so this mod is seriously awesome! It lets you turn your power armor into Buzz Lightyear’s suit from Toy Story! It’s a total visual upgrade and honestly, it makes me feel ready to handle any crazy situation the wasteland throws at me. Definitely a must-have if you’re a fan!

Swiftageddon

Taylor Swift is currently incredibly popular and successful in the music industry – her influence has even been jokingly compared to something as massive as a nuclear catastrophe.

This mod changes the player’s Pip-Boy – that helpful device on your wrist – to a bright pink color, adding a vibrant touch to the game’s often desolate landscape. It also replaces the menu backgrounds with images of Taylor Swift, letting you admire your favorite singer while you select weapons and gear up to fight enemies.

Vault Girl Recreations – Cooper Howard from the Fallout TV Show

Fans of the TV show will enjoy this new mod by VaultGirl2077 and xMakeDamnSurex, which lets you play as Cooper Howard, either as a human or a ghoul. It’s been created with a lot of detail and looks fantastic.

Naruto Running

A particularly memorable visual element of the anime Naruto is the way its characters run. They often appear less like people and more like quickly moving chickens, with their heads forward and arms trailing behind.

As a huge Naruto fan, I’m so excited about this mod! It lets you change how your character moves in power armor to look like the characters from the show – and honestly, it’s ridiculously funny to watch! You can basically make your armored character run like they’re straight out of the anime.

Lowered Weapons

As a Fallout fan, I’ve noticed something kinda weird. The NPCs don’t seem to care if you’re constantly pointing a gun at them, which is…odd. It actually breaks the feeling of being in the wasteland, because you end up walking around with your weapon drawn all the time, and it just doesn’t feel right. It would be great if they reacted more to that!

This mod fixes that issue by automatically lowering your weapon when you’re not actively shooting.

This enhances the immersive experience and actually helps you see more of your surroundings. Keeping the mini-nuke launcher down gives you a wider field of view.

Disable character light

Characters in Fallout 4 have pretty strong hero lighting that makes them glow unnaturally.

The difference is especially noticeable in dim environments like indoors or at night, and the game appears much more realistic when these effects are turned off.

This doesn’t require any downloads – you just need to make a few changes to a configuration file. You can find instructions on how to do that on the Nexus Mods website.
