I have to say, Ludwig is easily one of my favorite characters in GreedFall: The Dying World. He’s this really interesting guy – a former soldier who’s now a smuggler, and let’s just say he doesn’t always play by the rules! He joins Vriden Gerr’s group pretty quickly, and in combat, he’s a powerhouse, relying on strong melee attacks – you can tell he learned a lot during his time in the military.
Ludwig is more than just a damage dealer; to truly maximize his potential, you need to invest in his stats, choose the right skills, and equip him properly. With the right build, he can become a powerful tank, capable of protecting your team through even the most challenging battles. He’s surprisingly effective in that role.
Best Skills For Ludwig

Ludwig is a versatile fighter. He’s built like a classic tank, with plenty of defensive abilities, but he also has surprising magical attacks, which is unusual for someone who fights up close.
Smuggler’s Road
This skill tree gives Ludwig his core abilities, shaping how he plays. If you’re using Ludwig as your main tank (instead of Vriden Gerr or Till), prioritize the skills on the left side as soon as they become available – they’re focused on tanking. The skills on the right side offer helpful tactical advantages.
Vital Transmission is a really useful skill to acquire when it becomes available.
For improving your character’s posture, we suggest equipping two items: one with the Armour boost and another with the Magical Deflection boost. Both are particularly helpful for characters designed to withstand a lot of damage.
Weapons Of War
This skill tree focuses on Ludwig’s primary damage-dealing abilities, and you can’t really make bad choices here. What’s special is that almost all of the passive skills are helpful in any situation, which is unusual for companions in this game.
You might be able to skip Survivor’s Rage in the third tier and put those skill points somewhere else. By the time you unlock it, you should already have a strong team and strategy, meaning your characters shouldn’t often be left with very little health for long periods.
Double Fracas and Survivor’s Strategy aren’t very important skills to prioritize; there are much stronger options available in the second tier before considering these.
Ludwig’s Path
Here, you’ll discover many abilities that increase the magical damage Ludwig deals. Skills that boost magical damage are especially important, so keep an eye out for them as you progress.

Skills like Smuggler’s Ruse and Combat Rage aren’t very useful and can probably be skipped. Smuggler’s Ruse only gives a small boost to dodging, and Combat Rage requires a strong Double Fracas attack, which isn’t ideal for Ludwig’s damage output, as we discussed earlier.
Best Attributes For Ludwig
When playing Ludwig, focus on building his Endurance above all else. As the tank, he’ll be taking damage, so more health is crucial for survival. After maximizing Endurance, prioritize Strength. This will allow him to retaliate effectively after taking hits. Aim to get both Endurance and Strength to 20 as quickly as possible.
Ludwig relies heavily on Action Points, so keeping your Focus high is important. It’s best to get it to around 15 or 18 early on. After that, you can start investing in Will, primarily to increase your Power through Affinity.
