Honestly, things were finally going well for Humphrey! Work was good, home life with Martha was lovely – aside from that one time his houseboat decided to go on an adventure without him! But then, right at the start of season 4, he got some really shocking news. It totally threw everything off!
I was really worried when Chief Superintendent Charlie Woods left – he was the only one higher up who truly had our Shipton Abbott team’s back, and now they’re exposed again. Humphrey quickly figured that out too; it’s clear they’re vulnerable without him.
Mr. Smith called him to The Hub and delivered some bad news: budget cuts are happening again. This means he needs to fire either Esther, Kelby, or Margo.
Zahra Ahmadi explained to TopMob that he’s facing a tough challenge because Humphrey is deeply committed to his work and cares a lot about his team.
It’s difficult to say, as I want to be respectful of Death in Paradise, but it seems like he’s really settled in and found his place at Shipton Abbott.
He seems content with his life and his relationship with Martha right now, and having that peace disrupted is incredibly difficult for him.
Leaving aside the feelings surrounding this situation, Ahmadi also pointed out that Esther, Kelby, and Margo are all responsible for helping to protect Shipton Abbott.
She explained that everyone is valuable and contributes to the whole, and taking even one person away is noticeable. She often uses this idea when describing the people who work on a film or show – the cast and crew.
Ahmadi explained that community policing is uniquely effective because it’s built on genuine connection and care, something that larger-scale operations often lack.
She acknowledged the immense size of police forces like the Metropolitan Police, stating it presents a challenge. It’s difficult for such a large organization to build the close relationships with people – both victims and offenders – that smaller, community-focused teams can, which is why those smaller teams are often so effective.
Ahmadi explained that these people have close relationships both at work and personally, making Mr. Smith’s order particularly upsetting and hindering their progress.

She described them as a true family, explaining that their connection goes beyond just friendship. Everyone has a specific role to play, which is a key reason why they work so well together.
It’s really tough for Humphrey to let go of people he respects and cares about, and it genuinely pains him. But he also understands how losing them will affect our ability to do our jobs effectively, and that’s something he worries about a lot. He truly cares about both the people and the work.
So, if it was Esther making the call, what does Ahmadi think she would she do?
He explained that if Esther faced that decision, she’d strongly oppose it. She’s incredibly dedicated to Shipton Abbott, having been involved there as long as Kelby has.
She’s completely accepted Humphrey and made him a part of the group. She doesn’t view him as an outsider at all – he’s now a key member of the team, and she would fiercely defend him.

However, Esther can also make tough choices,” she continued, then quickly clarified that wasn’t quite right.
I honestly don’t know what she was thinking. It would have been helpful if someone had asked me that question during filming, because I think I would have understood Humphrey better then. It’s a really difficult situation.
Ahmadi admits that, given how advanced technology is today, Margo could potentially be replaced by an AI receptionist.
She noted that, unfortunately, as women age, they often become less visible in society and may feel undervalued. It’s a common experience, and something many people recognize.
I strongly disagree with that idea, though it might be a result of something else. However, it definitely wouldn’t be caused by Humphrey or Esther.
Perhaps, suggests Ahmadi, her character would sacrifice herself.
I’m not suggesting Esther is perfect, but I question whether she’d ever actually go through with it, because I doubt she’s capable of such a thing, she said.
The team really needs Humphrey. Kelby and Margo are incredibly valuable to her, and she appreciates all their hard work. She likely feels confident that with Humphrey leading and Kelby and Margo supporting him, they can handle things just fine without her.
Well, let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.
