The Beyond Paradise Christmas special had plenty of unexpected moments, including Martha secretly planning a wedding and the surprising arrival of Mr. Selwyn Patterson to act as Humphrey’s best man.
So, after making the big choice to leave his job at the end of season 14, I was really curious to see what happened with our guy. Turns out, he just took off – and it was great to see him show up at Shipton Abbott for a friend’s wedding! It really highlighted how much freedom he suddenly had, and it was a nice little moment to see him enjoying that new chapter.
The holiday episode might have given viewers a clue about what’s coming up for Selwyn, as he received a call from Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson during the wedding celebration.
The actors in Death in Paradise, including Don Warrington, are keeping Selwyn’s future on the show a secret. However, many fans believe he’ll return, especially considering a hint in the latest episode description: “The team will need all the help they can get with a difficult case, and might ask a former colleague who’s visiting the UK for Christmas to assist.”
But what of his future beyond that? Could he decide to rejoin Saint Marie PD as commissioner?
According to Marshall, only two original cast members remain on the show: Elizabeth Bourgine, who plays Catherine, and Don. Despite numerous cast changes throughout the years, the show has consistently persevered.
Those are your core strengths, the things that really hold everything together, so I think it would probably make it through if Don left. But would it still be any good? I doubt it.
If this Christmas special truly marks the end of his time on the show, he’s facing a particularly challenging case.

The company’s Christmas party goes horribly wrong when four colleagues wake up with terrible hangovers and discover a dead body in their villa’s pool, according to the plot summary.
Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson and his team have found the gun used in the murder, but they’re completely stumped. The weapon was locked in a drawer… thousands of miles away in Swindon, at the time of the shooting!
That doesn’t make any sense. Plus, why did the victim have a reindeer’s name tattooed on his hand?
So, will Selwyn be the one to crack the case – and could it reignite his passion for the job?
But it’s not just work that takes centre stage in the Christmas special…
According to the story summary, Mervin contacted his brother, whom he recently found, but hasn’t heard back yet.
Will he be able to work out his personal problems and find some holiday cheer, both for his teammates and the community?
