Big Little Lies is making a big little time jump.
Liane Moriarty, the author of the book that the first season of the HBO series was based on, has announced a sequel called Big Little Truths. The new book is scheduled to be released on August 25th and will be the foundation for the show’s third season.
The new installment of Big Little Truths revisits the familiar characters – portrayed by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz – a decade after the events and investigation surrounding the death in the first book.
In the new book, the five women’s kids are in high school when an alarming discovery is made.
The story begins with the principal receiving a severed finger in the mail, Liane explained to USA Today. Unlike the first book, where parents acted as a chorus commenting on the events, this time it’s the teenagers – the students – who provide that perspective. The story unfolds through interviews with them about what happened.
The author explained that people often start the story by saying it all began at Madeline’s fiftieth birthday party.
Meanwhile, a new character enters the picture and unsettles the Monterey Five.

The story begins when a mysterious man starts hanging around the school, asking what seem like harmless questions. This forces a close-knit group of mothers to confront the consequences of the secrets they’ve kept from their children – and the truths they’ve revealed.
Liane Moriarty, author of the book that inspired the second season of the TV show (which starred Meryl Streep), has confirmed that her collection of short stories, Big Little Truths, will be the basis for season three. However, she told USA Today that she prefers to let the show’s creators handle the adaptation and doesn’t get heavily involved in the process.
As she put it, “I always said I only ever wanted to be an interested bystander.”
However, Liane acknowledged that the popular TV series—which has received eight Emmy Awards, including one for Laura’s portrayal of Renata Klein—has definitely influenced her writing, and she wouldn’t claim otherwise.
I really wanted to give Laura Dern a larger part in this book because she was so fantastic as Renata. The character was just too good to keep on the sidelines.
No release date for Big Little Lies season three has been announced by HBO.

This movie is based on Ali Hazelwood’s popular 2021 novel. Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, it’s a romantic comedy inspired by the “fake dating” trope that became a huge hit on TikTok.
