Bill Flynn, Voice of One Piece’s Genzo and Detective Conan’s Dr. Agasa, Dies at 86

It has been reported that the esteemed English voice actor, Bill Flynn, passed away this past summer at the age of 86. Although he passed on July 4th, it wasn’t until August that Restland Funeral Home announced memorial arrangements for the late actor. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 16th, at Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas. Known professionally as both Bill Flynn and William Flynn, this versatile actor was well-known for voicing numerous English dubs of popular anime series. Among his most recognizable works is his portrayal of Dr. Agasa in the original English version of Case Closed.

In the animated series “One Piece,” Flynn portrayed Genzo, a recurring character, while he voiced Dr. Agasa in the initial seasons and the first six movies of “Case Closed.” However, he continued to voice Genzo until 2019 for the East Blue special of “One Piece.” Later on in “Case Closed” anime dub, Christopher Guerroro took over as Dr. Agasa. Flynn also lent his voice to characters in “Attack on Titan,” “Fairy Tail,” “Gunslinger Girl,” “Barakamon,” and “Heaven’s Lost Property.” He is survived by his sister Betty, brother John, and son Aaron, leaving behind a wealth of dubbed performances that will long be remembered by fans.

Who Is William “Bill” Flynn?

Willian J. Flynn was born to John F. Flynn and Celestine M. Sullivan on September 9th, 1938. Unlike venturing into the entertainment world right away, he initially embarked on a career as a pilot, even serving as an instructor at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma. He left the military in 1970, pursued a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counselling, and dedicated his time to counseling adults with disabilities. In the 80s, he discovered a love for acting and theater, both on stage and screen.

Throughout much of his life, he consistently played a reliable role in the acting community of Dallas for several decades. Eventually, Funimation chose him for multiple roles in their anime series. Flynn was renowned for portraying older, gentle characters, often being the preferred choice for minor or supporting older roles by Funimation. Genzo and Dr. Agasa were his most frequent roles, yet Genzo wasn’t Flynn’s sole role in “One Piece.” During the early stages of Funimation’s dubbing of “One Piece,” Flynn also voiced Tonjit, the eccentric old man, during the Long Ring Long Land arc.

Expressing sympathy for the late Bill Flynn, an exceptional and multitalented actor, our deepest condolences are extended to his immediate family and dear friends during this difficult time.
