Previously employed at Blizzard Entertainment as the head of their Diablo series for a period of five years, Rod Fergusson has now taken up the position of studio head at Cloud Chamber, the team behind BioShock 4. However, it’s important to note that there have been some layoffs at the studio, though the exact number remains undefined.
According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Fergusson is coming back to the beloved series, having joined Irrational Games as a “Closer” during the final stages of BioShock Infinite‘s production. In this role, he helps manage the project towards completion, making critical decisions about content and gameplay to see it through to the finish line.
Currently serving as a studio leader, Fergusson now faces the challenge of overseeing another BioShock series installation that seems to be facing rough waters. Just last week, Schreier announced that the fourth BioShock game fell short during a publisher evaluation and substantial adjustments are required within the project’s storyline.
In the current moment, a representative from 2K Games stated: “We’re putting in our best efforts to ensure BioShock thrives in the future. At present, we have a good game, but our aim is to make it exceptional. We are collaborating with the studio’s leadership to chart this course.
BioShock 4 is still several months from release, which is why Fergusson has joined Cloud Chamber during an earlier phase of development. However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is confident that the game will indeed be released as planned, stating emphatically: “This I can affirm without any doubt or question.” Interestingly, a remake of the original BioShock from the PS3 era was also discussed in the Bloomberg report, but it appears this project has been postponed for now.
In a recent social media post, Fergusson expressed his eagerness to begin work in the near future, yet acknowledged that the studio’s restructuring is a challenging period for the team. He expressed profound gratitude for the work accomplished thus far and reaffirmed his dedication to creating a BioShock game that both the team and players will be proud of and enjoy playing.
