BioWare, the developer of the Mass Effect series, traditionally uses November 7th – known as “N7 Day” – to share updates with fans. This year, however, instead of revealing new details about the next Mass Effect game, they simply confirmed that it’s still in development. This came in response to online rumors suggesting the project was facing difficulties or might be cancelled.
BioWare stated that both they and EA are dedicated to continuing the Mass Effect story. They acknowledged a busy few years but assured fans the team is now fully focused on the new game, working on its vast universe, features, and character relationships. They promise to share more when they’re ready.
This confirmation comes at a time of change for EA. BioWare experienced layoffs earlier this year, reducing the team to under 100 people. Further cuts impacted other EA studios like Respawn Entertainment, and one project – a Black Panther game – was cancelled entirely. Recently, EA agreed to be taken private through a deal involving private equity and investment from Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about potential future changes to game content and the possibility of more layoffs.
The next Mass Effect game was initially teased in 2020, but very little information has been released since. A new teaser for N7 Day 2023 showcased a new character and hinted at a possible title – either “Epsilon” or “Mass Effect 5.”
Some updates on the Mass Effect TV series, and a cryptic message
BioWare recently shared an update about the future of Mass Effect, though details on the next game are still scarce. The update focused on the long-awaited Mass Effect TV series coming to Amazon.
The series will be set *after* the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy and won’t retell Commander Shepard’s story – a decision I agree with, as trying to match the game’s choices in a TV show would be a mistake. It’s a similar approach to Amazon’s Fallout series, which takes place years after Fallout 4.
Interestingly, BioWare hid a secret message within their blog post! Italicized letters throughout the text spell out “URL KROGAN.” This, combined with a clue on X (formerly Twitter), led fans to discover new artwork depicting a civil war among the Krogan – a race that happens to be my favorite in the Mass Effect universe, so I’m very excited to see where this goes.
