BioWare’s Biggest Failure ANTHEM Shuts Down Today

Today marks the end for BioWare’s game ANTHEM. The developer is shutting down the online servers for the 2019 action game, meaning players will no longer be able to access it online.

Because this game is played entirely online, it will become unplayable on all consoles and PCs once the servers are shut down. While the exact shutdown time isn’t known beyond today, the game is currently still available, and many fans are broadcasting their final gameplay sessions on Twitch.

By the end of today, though, ANTHEM will no longer be playable.

Many dedicated players are revisiting the game specifically to earn the Platinum Trophy. Several fans have shared their experiences and how to unlock it on Reddit.

In 2019, BioWare released ANTHEM for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This online game represented a departure for the studio, venturing into the loot-shooter genre. Unfortunately, it didn’t gain much traction and received negative reviews and feedback from players.

When it first came out, we gave the game a 5 out of 10. The Metacritic score for the PlayStation 4 version is 54, which is the lowest rating any major BioWare release has ever received.

We believe ANTHEM has potential and could eventually become a really solid game, but it’s unclear if it will get the time and attention needed to improve. While the combat is exciting and fun, the game is held back by poor design choices and underdeveloped systems.

Despite discussions within EA and BioWare about potentially fixing and relaunching the game, they ultimately decided to stop working on ANTHEM. That decision was made in 2021, and the game hasn’t received any significant updates since. Today, ANTHEM is no longer available.

Following a difficult period, BioWare has bounced back with releases like the Mass Effect Legendary Edition – a collection of the original three games – and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. They are currently beginning development on a brand-new Mass Effect game.
