The much-awaited return of Black Clover, which has been absent from our screens for four years, is now in production. This comeback promises significant improvements, and fans are eagerly anticipating it. The original anime concluded with more than 170 episodes, ending on a towering cliffhanger as Asta and the Clover Kingdom prepared to battle the Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom. However, this cliffhanger was purposefully left unresolved, a fact that the new series should be mindful about in its continuation.
Initially, the “Black Clover” anime debuted in 2017 with weekly episodes, following the storyline of Yuki Tabata’s original manga for several years. However, it ended before completely catching up to the manga. Now, as we gear up for Season 2 of “Black Clover,” it’s hinting at a more sustainable seasonal release schedule this time around.
Black Clover Kicks Off New Seasonal Anime
Initially, “Black Clover” was disseminated in North America through four numbered seasons as home video releases. However, it was considered a continuous release from the beginning. Recently, it’s been announced that “Black Clover” will return with what is being called “Season 2.” As of now, the returning team or cast members have not been disclosed. Yet, Studio Pierrot, who produced the first season, will oversee the production of the new episodes. The fact that it’s being billed as a new season suggests a promising future for the series.
If the upcoming episodes are indeed labeled as “Black Clover” Season 2, it hints that the series may transition to a regular seasonal release format when it comes back. Unlike its previous irregular weekly releases during the initial run, this new phase promises a more manageable and consistent schedule for the anime, which is advantageous in terms of production. If the seasonal release plan materializes, several benefits will follow for the anime’s fans.
What a Seasonal Schedule Means for Black Clover
In simpler terms, having a seasonal release schedule for Black Clover will enable it to steer clear of synchronizing with the manga once more. Given that Yuki Tabata’s manga is currently in its concluding storyline and releasing new chapters sporadically every few months, it suggests that the conclusion of the series could be approaching faster than anticipated (given that the anime is set to debut soon). However, with the anime being released on a seasonal basis, it provides the manga the opportunity to proceed at its own pace, allowing Tabata to deliver a fitting end.
In its present form, “Black Clover” still has much ground to cover before catching up with the latest manga chapters, and a seasonal release schedule for the anime would provide more creative flexibility. As of now, there’s no announced timeline for when the series will be out, so it might not debut until late 2026 or early 2027 at the earliest. Regardless, delivering about a dozen to thirteen episodes each year could keep “Black Clover” fans engaged for several years to come, even if the manga concludes before that timeframe.
It’s also possible that this will lead to a more visually appealing series in total. Previously, Studio Pierrot President Michiyuki Honma has suggested that changes in format could be beneficial, especially for seasonal anime releases like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Now, it looks like Black Clover is set to follow suit and become a seasonal series as well.
