As a movie reviewer with a penchant for unraveling the complexities of human nature and the intricacies of storytelling, I must say that “Black Doves” is a riveting thriller that leaves one spellbound from start to finish. The series masterfully weaves the duality of identity, a theme that resonates deeply with my own experiences as a critic often donning multiple masks – the jovial friend, the stern critic, and the insightful observer.
Joe Barton recently shared details on the true-life events that sparked the creation of his latest Netflix suspense series, Black Doves.
The six-part espionage series follows Helen (Pride and Prejudice’s Keira Knightley), who has a passionate affair with a man who gets caught in the middle of London’s criminal underworld.
Helen, initially appearing as an ideal hostess, loving mother, and devoted spouse to her husband and Member of Parliament, Wallace Webb (played by Andrew Buchan), is actually a politician’s wife.
In truth, though it might seem otherwise, Helen leads a secret dual existence. She’s not just an ordinary individual; she’s actually a highly skilled spy. Moreover, she belongs to the Black Doves, an elite espionage group that matches the caliber of James Bond’s 007 program.
Barton disclosed that the deceit exhibited by Helen was motivated by actual incidents from the ‘Spy Cops’ scandal which significantly impacted Britain.
He mentioned that he had also delved into information regarding the undercover police officers, referring to them as such. It was revealed that they had infiltrated an environmental organization and even had offspring within it, which is quite disturbing. This tale, unfortunately, is far more sinister and grim than what we’re discussing now.
However, I found myself agreeing that the concept – a long-lasting sham marriage, only to have it vanish later on – was indeed one of the driving forces behind it too.
Undercover police officers, known as “spy cops,” were a highly secretive team within the Metropolitan Police Service. They spent many years pretending to be other people, creating relationships and even fathering children as part of their undercover work. Their true identities remained hidden while they served as police officers.
Initially, Barton tried out several roles for Helen, eventually deciding that a politician’s wife would be an ideal disguise for her clandestine activities.
He clarified that she was portrayed as a journalist, although not a real one, needing to be near the centers of power.
During the period when Barton was crafting this story, both the holiday theme and his affection for the stark contrast Christmas offers played a role in shaping its unique twist on the traditional spy thriller genre.
He mentions that he’s long had the desire to establish something during Christmas, yet he hasn’t been able to achieve it effectively in the past. He explains that although Christmas is often portrayed as sweet and joyful, it can be a challenging period for many individuals, both emotionally and literally due to shorter daylight hours. Given these contrasting aspects, setting a thriller around this season seemed fitting because of its inherent darkness.
Barton himself admits that he penned the piece spontaneously, during his leisure time on Boxing Day, without any specific inspiration to guide him.
He mentioned, “Various concepts have been swirling in my mind, as if I’ve been pondering something secret agent-like.” He continued, “There were two characters I envisioned, and I had several distinct scenes playing out in my imagination.
Since everyone was out, I found myself with a few free hours. So, I decided to dive right in and began writing. To my surprise, I wrote quite steadily for an entire week, ultimately completing the piece on New Year’s Day.
