Everyone loves the Black Panther movies, so fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the third film. Information has been hard to come by, especially since director Ryan Coogler has been working on other projects. But now, we finally have a significant update on Black Panther 3’s release, and it could be a big moment for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ryan Coogler recently discussed his film Black Panther with the New York Times, including plans for a third installment. He revealed that Black Panther 3 is currently scheduled for release in 2028. Interestingly, this places the film after the Avengers: Secret Wars movie, which is expected to significantly change the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a Marvel fan, I’m really anticipating Black Panther 3 because it feels like it’s going to be ground zero for everything new happening in the MCU. Director Ryan Coogler’s film is poised to be one of the first places we see these changes play out – and honestly, anything could happen! We might see a totally different world, revamped heroes and villains, even alterations to past storylines or recastings, all to set the stage for what’s coming next. It’s a thrilling time to be a Marvel moviegoer, and Black Panther 3 is right at the heart of it all.
Ryan Coogler shared that completing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a turning point for him, finally allowing him to envision a long-term career as a filmmaker. He explained that the film was incredibly challenging, even feeling impossible to finish at times. Once it was released and he was satisfied with the result, he felt confident he could continue making movies for years to come.
When asked about his future plans after potentially finishing Black Panther 3, Ryan Coogler described a hopeful vision. He said he pictured a peaceful scene – a green meadow with fog, at dawn – representing a sense of new beginnings and limitless possibilities after working on the film.
As a huge fan of the Black Panther films, I knew Wakanda Forever had an impossible task ahead of it. Following Chadwick Boseman’s passing, it wasn’t just a movie – it was about honoring his legacy while also moving the story forward. It needed to acknowledge the real-world tragedy and weave it into the narrative, all while fitting into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Honestly, I was blown away by how Ryan Coogler handled it all. It’s truly commendable, and I’m thrilled to hear he’s returning to tell more stories in Wakanda. It’s a world worth exploring, and I can’t wait to see what he does next.
The delay of the film until 2028 was due to Ryan Coogler’s focus on his successful movie, Sinners, which launched a brand new franchise – something that’s rare these days. He previously told Deadline that Sinners was the reason he postponed working on Black Panther 3.
Coogler explained that someone asking about the origins of Sinners right before Black Panther 3 made him reflect on his career. He realized he’d been focused on telling stories that weren’t personal to him, and this project felt like a turning point to explore his own voice.
Coogler explained he felt he hadn’t yet created something truly personal. He found it amusing that people were surprised when he announced he was making a horror film, considering his lifelong love for the genre. He realized the audience didn’t fully know him as an artist, and he worried he’d reach fifty still feeling creatively undefined. He feared losing his voice and the urgency to share his stories. That’s why making this film, with the specific collaborators he chose, felt so critical and had to happen immediately – otherwise, he worried the opportunity would pass him by. He simply felt it was ‘now or never.’
The next Black Panther movie is currently scheduled for release in 2028. Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on December 18, 2026.
