Michael B. Jordan, known for his roles in films like Black Panther and Creed, is a big fan of anime. He’s long enjoyed series such as Attack on Titan and Naruto. Recently, he joined Austin Butler and Paul Mescal for a fun video-watching session, and used the opportunity to introduce them to My Hero Academia, sharing a key scene from one of the final seasons.
In a recent Variety video, actors Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, and Paul Mescal took part in a segment called “Guys Hanging Out Watching YouTube.” The funny video shows Michael B. Jordan sharing a dramatic scene from the seventh season of My Hero Academia where the character Bakugo appears to die in battle. Austin Butler jokingly points out that the clip spoils the show, while Jordan insists the scene’s emotional impact is worth seeing. During the segment, Jordan also discussed the themes often found in anime, like friendship and self-sacrifice, reaffirming his passion for the art form.
How Anime Influences Jordan
Michael B. Jordan often draws inspiration from anime for his work. For instance, the armor worn by Killmonger in Black Panther was clearly influenced by Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z. When Jordan directed Creed 3, he incorporated elements from anime like Hajime no Ippo into the boxing sequences. In a recent Vanity Fair video, Jordan talks about how anime specifically influenced his latest film.
I noticed a lot of exciting fight scenes in anime that I wanted to use as inspiration for Creed 3. I was particularly interested in how anime creates such incredible, almost unbelievable action, and how we could achieve a similar effect in a live-action film.
During a conversation, Butler revealed he’s a fan of classic anime like Paprika and Perfect Blue, playfully suggesting Paul Mescal needs to watch more. Mescal has only seen Dragon Ball Z, which he considers a cornerstone of anime, and was introduced to My Hero Academia by Jordan, who showed him a memorable scene. Given Jordan’s directing experience with Creed 3 and his ambition to adapt anime into live-action, it’s possible this talented director might one day bring a well-known anime franchise to life.
