Black Phone 2 Ends Troubling Blumhouse Box Office Trend

Blumhouse Productions is well-known for making successful horror movies, responsible for hits like *Paranormal Activity*, *Insidious*, *The Purge*, *Happy Death Day*, and *Get Out*. However, the studio faced some setbacks this year with disappointing box office numbers for films like the *Wolf Man* reboot ($34.1 million worldwide) and *M3GAN 2.0* ($39 million globally). They were hoping the sequel *Black Phone 2* would turn things around, and thankfully, it did.

The new horror film *Black Phone 2* had a strong opening weekend, earning $26.5 million in the US and Canada, according to *The Hollywood Reporter*. Worldwide, it brought in $42 million. This is a better result than the first *Black Phone* film, which made $23.6 million domestically when it was released in the summer of 2022.

Can Black Phone 2 Have Strong Legs at the Box Office?

The horror film *Black Phone 2* is continuing a trend of box office success this year, exceeding initial predictions just like *Sinners*, *Weapons*, and *Final Destination: Bloodlines*. Having already earned back its $30 million production cost, the film is expected to be quite profitable. If it continues to perform well, *Black Phone 2* could even surpass the $161.4 million earned by the first *Black Phone* movie.

Several factors suggest *Black Phone 2* could perform well in theaters for weeks to come. Critics generally liked the movie, especially its story, frightening scenes, and Ethan Hawke’s performance. Positive buzz from viewers should help it stay popular. The timing is also ideal – audiences are currently craving scary movies, and *Black Phone 2* doesn’t have much competition. It essentially has a clear path to Halloween. Upcoming releases, like the *Springsteen* biopic and re-releases of *Kpop Demon Hunters* and *Bugonia*, don’t pose a significant threat, and there aren’t any other major horror films scheduled for wide release this month.

Even if *Black Phone 2* doesn’t immediately become the number one movie, it’s still expected to do well in theaters. This is good news for producer Jason Blum, who has been dealing with disappointing results from *M3GAN 2.0* and *Wolf Man* earlier this year. While Blumhouse needs to be mindful of what audiences want (the mix of genres in *M3GAN 2.0* didn’t resonate well), *Black Phone 2* is a step in the right direction. It proves Blumhouse can still create successful movies and doesn’t need to drastically change its approach.

Given the success of *Black Phone 2*, Blumhouse is likely considering a third film in the series. The franchise has been profitable, and Universal would probably greenlight another sequel if director Scott Derrickson had a compelling idea. Horror movies are known for their low budgets, which encourages studios to take risks on new ideas, but having reliable, proven successes is also valuable. While the *M3GAN* spin-off *SOULM8TE* is planned for next year, the future of that franchise is uncertain after the disappointing performance of *M3GAN 2.0*. This could create an opportunity for the villain from *The Black Phone*, known as the Grabber, to become Blumhouse’s next signature character.
