Blade’s 5 Most Powerful Villains In Marvel Comics, Ranked By Threat Level

A common concern about a Blade movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that the character lacks compelling villains from the comics, but that’s simply not true. Blade actually started as a supporting character in the comic book Tomb of Dracula in 1973, where Dracula himself was the main villain and Blade became one of his most frequent adversaries. The successful Blade film in the 1990s – a groundbreaking Marvel movie – paved the way for other superhero adaptations like X-Men and Spider-Man. This popularity then led to Blade receiving a larger role in the comics, which in turn introduced more significant villains for him to fight.

Here are five of the most compelling villains from the Blade comics and movies, any of whom would be a great addition to a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film starring the Daywalker.

5) Deacon Frost

Those familiar with the original Blade films will remember Deacon Frost, the primary villain in the first movie, portrayed by Stephen Dorff. He’s also a significant villain in the Marvel comics. Interestingly, the comic book version of Deacon Frost is an older character. He’s infamous for attacking Blade’s mother while she was pregnant, which led to her infection and, ultimately, Blade’s birth.

Blade was driven by two powerful desires: to destroy Dracula and to avenge his mother’s death at the hands of Deacon Frost, the vampire who also turned him into a daywalker. Frost first appeared in a 1973 issue of Tomb of Dracula, shortly after Blade’s introduction. He’s also known for turning Hannibal King into a vampire and for attempting to overthrow Dracula using a duplicate of Blade, hoping to become the new leader of all vampires. Though many Marvel characters have returned from the dead, Deacon Frost remains deceased.

4) Lucas Cross

Lucas Cross has a deeper connection to Blade than Deacon Frost ever did – he’s actually Blade’s father. Lucas is a more recent addition to the Blade universe, first appearing in Blade Vol. 5 #1 in 2006. While Tara Brooks was pregnant with their child, Lucas was wrongly convicted of a crime and imprisoned in Latveria.

While in prison, he encountered a vampire who killed and then turned him into one of the undead, and together they broke out. Known as Cross, he’s a powerful politician connected to the Order of Tyrana, a secretive group involved in the occult and particularly interested in Blade. Even after twenty years, it’s still unknown what Lucas’s true intentions are regarding his son.

3) Dracula

Blade’s most frequent enemy is Dracula, the powerful Lord of the Vampires. Blade first appeared in the comic book series Tomb of Dracula, where he consistently challenged the villain. Dracula also served as the main antagonist in Blade Trinity, the third film in the original Blade movie series.

The relationship between Blade and Dracula has deteriorated to the point where they can’t even cooperate when they’re technically allies. Despite Dracula and his vampires assisting in the battle against Knull, Blade attacked them afterward, prompting the United Nations to grant Dracula immunity as if he were the leader of a nation. Recently, the situation flipped: Blade became corrupted and turned villainous during the Blood Hunt event, while Dracula surprisingly became a force for good and fought against his old enemy.

2) Lilith

In Marvel Comics, several characters are named Lilith, but the one who consistently opposes Blade is Lilith Drake. She’s the daughter of Dracula and first appeared in 1974’s Giant-Size Chillers Featuring Curse of Dracula #1. Dracula rejected Lilith and her mother shortly after her birth because he resented being forced into marriage with her mother. This rejection fueled a lifelong hatred of her father within Lilith.

Lilith was raised by a Romani woman named Gretchin, who used magic to transform her into a unique kind of vampire – one without the usual vulnerabilities. Though she often clashed with her father, Lilith has battled numerous foes, including Blade and Hannibal King. More recently, she teamed up with SHIELD’s Howling Commandos, but she’s consistently fought to control her intense thirst for blood.

1) Varnae

As a huge Blade fan, everyone always talks about Dracula and Deacon Frost as the big bads, but honestly, Varnae is the real threat. He’s the ancient vampire who actually took control of Blade, making him go dark in the ‘Blood Hunt’ comics. And get this – Varnae isn’t just old, he’s ancient. He’s even older than Dracula, and was originally a sorcerer from Atlantis way back before it was lost underwater. That’s a seriously intimidating backstory!

Varnae first appeared in Bizarre Adventures #33 in 1982. Though his physical form was destroyed in Nightstalkers #18 in 1994, he vanished for decades before returning to inhabit Blade in 2024’s Blood Hunt. Varnae was a cruel and heartless monster, even making Dracula seem like a good guy by comparison. He was incredibly savage, and didn’t hesitate to harm even those he was close to. Aside from Dracula, he’s one of the most powerful vampires ever to exist, but his brutality makes him even more of a threat.
