A reboot of the classic British sci-fi show Blake’s 7 is in the works, and it’s being directed by Peter Hoar, who also directed The Last of Us. This project is one of the first from Hoar’s new production company, Multitude Productions, which will focus on genre-based entertainment.
James Hoar is a director who received an award for Outstanding Directing from the Directors Guild of America. He’s planning to direct the upcoming reboot of Blake’s 7 himself. The original Blake’s 7 series aired on BBC1, and although the reboot hasn’t been offered to television networks yet, there’s optimism that the BBC might also broadcast the new version.
As a long-time fan, I remember the original Blake’s 7 being a real standout when it first aired. Terry Nation not only brought the show to life, but he also penned the very first episode of the series, which initially ran from 1978 to 1981 and captivated audiences for four seasons.
Blake’s 7 is a science fiction series that centers on Roj Blake and a group of rebels fighting against the oppressive Terran Federation, which rules Earth and its colonies.
This isn’t the first time someone has tried to revive Blake’s 7, but past efforts haven’t made it to television. Now, Multitude has obtained the rights directly from the estate of Terry Nation, the show’s creator, and plans to start working on the script and finding actors soon.
The Blake’s 7 Reboot Comes at the Perfect Time
The original Blake’s 7 aired during the peak of classic Doctor Who. Both shows experienced a decline in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, but continued through novels, comics, and other media. Radio dramas and audio stories have been particularly successful, allowing both Blake’s 7 and Doctor Who to bring back original cast members for new adventures.
While Blake’s 7 enjoyed a successful revival starting in 2005, lasting for two decades, its future is now uncertain following Ncuti Gatwa’s unexpected departure. This could be an ideal opportunity for another beloved British science fiction series to emerge and fill the void.
According to Hoar, Blake’s 7 gained a legendary status because it unexpectedly filled the timeslot originally meant for the police show Softly, Softly. The show was given a limited budget – enough for one main set and a few outdoor scenes. Hoar recalls feeling a connection to these early shows, appreciating their creativity despite their obvious financial constraints. He remembers being able to look past the wobbly sets and enjoy the story. He later compared Blake’s 7 to a more recent series, praising both for their strong storytelling, clever writing, and overall sophistication.
Unfortunately, you can’t stream Blake 7 in North America right now. But you can buy and watch it on digital platforms like Amazon and Apple TV.
