Blizzard Entertainment is a leading video game company known for incredibly popular and successful franchises like Overwatch, Hearthstone, Diablo, Warcraft, and World of Warcraft. While these games are widely celebrated, fans are also eager for a new installment in the StarCraft series, which hasn’t seen a major release in quite some time. To date, there are only two main StarCraft games, with a long gap between them – the first launched in 1998, and the second didn’t arrive until 2010.

It’s been twelve years since a new core StarCraft game was released, and over fifteen years since the last installment in the series. While there have been expansions and remastered versions since StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty came out in 2010, fans are eager to experience the classic gameplay that made StarCraft a defining real-time strategy game in the late 1990s and 2010s. A new game is currently in development, but it’s taking the series in a different direction. This change may split the fanbase, with some fans wanting a return to the original style and others welcoming something new within the StarCraft universe.

Blizzard Needs to Make Starcraft III

Rumors suggest a new StarCraft game is in the works, but it might not be what fans expect. Current reports indicate Blizzard could reveal a third-person shooter at BlizzCon 2026, similar to how they transformed Warcraft into World of Warcraft. While it’s uncertain if the new StarCraft will also become a massive online role-playing game, the original series was famous for its real-time strategy and tactical gameplay, and many fans hope the next installment will stay true to those roots.

It’s always a gamble when a game series tries something new. Whether it works depends on how fans react. Ensemble Studios took a risk with Halo Wars in 2009, turning the popular first-person shooter Halo into a real-time strategy game, and it did okay. However, the Halo series has mostly stuck with its original style. Blizzard has also successfully changed its game formats, as seen with the huge success of World of Warcraft. Still, some gamers who don’t enjoy massive online role-playing games were hoping for Warcraft IV, a strategy game that was apparently planned but ultimately cancelled.

It’s understandable why Blizzard Entertainment moved away from real-time strategy (RTS) games. While we can’t know for sure, it seems likely the declining popularity of the genre played a role. RTS games were hugely popular in the 90s and early 2000s, but now players are more interested in things like multiplayer shooters, casual games, and massive online role-playing games. This explains why Blizzard changed its focus. Still, many fans would love to see a new RTS game in the future.

Blizzard Should but Probably Won’t Make a New StarCraft RTS

Considering how the gaming landscape has evolved over the last decade, it’s doubtful Blizzard will revive the StarCraft series with a new real-time strategy game. Though not officially announced, rumors point to the next StarCraft title being a third-person shooter, and Blizzard rarely changes course once it’s set on a direction. However, the studio successfully remade its older Warcraft games, so a remaster of the original StarCraft and its sequel remains a possibility. We likely won’t get definitive answers until BlizzCon 2026.
