Blizzard’s New Overwatch Game Is a Complete Misfire

When Blizzard launched Overwatch on May 24, 2016, it quickly became incredibly popular. As a brand new game from a well-respected developer, it breathed new life into the hero shooter genre and helped create a thriving market. Players were captivated by its world, characters, and story for years. While Overwatch 2 had some initial challenges, Blizzard seemed to be improving things with the latest updates. However, it’s now puzzling to see Blizzard potentially undermining the success of Overwatch with a newly announced game that doesn’t seem to have a clear target audience.

Overwatch Rush is a new mobile game based in the Overwatch universe, bringing back familiar characters and the same core gameplay. However, it differs by shrinking matches to 4v4 and switching to a top-down viewpoint. Rather than expanding on the Overwatch experience, it essentially offers a re-packaged version of the game players already know on PC and consoles.

Overwatch Pushes Onto Mobile

Blizzard is developing Overwatch Rush, but a team separate from the one that works on the main Overwatch game is handling its creation. While no release date has been announced, Blizzard showed off some of the playable characters and a preview of the gameplay. Familiar faces like Reinhardt, Soldier 76, Mercy, Lucio, Pharah, Tracer, and Reaper will be included, and they seem to play similarly to how they did in the original game. Beyond that, Blizzard is adding features and mechanics designed for mobile play.

Games are quick – a match of Control usually takes around three minutes, making it great for playing when you have a little free time. The controls are standard for mobile games: you move with the left side of the screen and use buttons on the right to attack and activate abilities. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Overwatch Rush seems like a solid mobile adaptation of the original. It remains to be seen how well it will do compared to other popular mobile titles like Pokemon Unite or League of Legends: Wild Rift, as it shares many similarities with them.

Blizzard has been focusing more and more on mobile gaming, and now Overwatch is joining the trend. Games like Hearthstone, Diablo Immortal, and Warcraft Rumble have already brought some of Blizzard’s popular franchises to mobile devices with varying degrees of success. The new Overwatch Rush appears to be taking a similar path to Diablo Immortal, offering a comparable experience designed for on-the-go play, unlike the unique style of Warcraft Rumble. However, I believe Blizzard is missing a chance to really stand out by not trying something new with Overwatch on mobile.

Blizzard Could Have Explored Overwatch’s Lore Through a New Game

A major draw of Overwatch is its rich backstory and compelling characters, which Blizzard has beautifully showcased in cinematic shorts. However, this lore isn’t often integrated into the game itself, though the studio has recently started offering small bits of story through in-game comics and short videos. Players are eager to truly connect with these characters and their histories within the game, and Overwatch Rush demonstrates a misunderstanding of what the community wants. Instead of new ways to play, players are asking for ways to experience the characters and their interwoven stories.

I was honestly pretty bummed when I first saw gameplay of Overwatch Rush. I just started getting back into the game with the new season, and I’m really enjoying it! The new heroes, Vendetta and Domina, have actually made me care about the Overwatch universe more than ever. What I really want is a game that lets us see what these characters are like outside of just fighting, but it feels like Blizzard isn’t giving fans like me what we’re hoping for.

Instead of just re-releasing Overwatch with slight changes, Blizzard had the opportunity to explore the game’s rich backstory in a completely new way through a different genre. For example, a role-playing game could have focused on specific characters and revealed more of the story gradually from a personal perspective. A card game could have showcased different parts of the world with small bits of lore. Even a game like a gacha title could have delved into the smaller details of each character’s history. Really, almost any other type of game would have offered a fresh experience and given fans the deeper story and interactions with the Overwatch universe they were hoping for.

Overwatch Rush Is Not the Direction the Series Needs

Overwatch Rush feels unnecessary, like a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. With options like the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch already available for on-the-go gaming, and cross-progression letting players continue their progress anywhere, a separate mobile version feels redundant. If Blizzard wanted Overwatch on phones, they could have simply optimized the existing game for mobile devices.

Look, Overwatch 2 already had people a little worried, and this new Overwatch Rush thing just feels like a step in the wrong direction. Honestly, Blizzard was doing so well! They basically restarted the game and added five new heroes, which actually got my friends and me playing again after years of not being interested. To see them release Overwatch Rush now, after all that work to win us back, feels really off. Knowing how talented the team at Blizzard is, they could’ve gone in so many better directions instead of this.

Look, I love Overwatch, and I was really hyped after Overwatch: The Reign of Talon. It felt like they were building something huge! But this new thing, Overwatch Rush… honestly, it feels like a step backwards. We don’t need another game that does the same thing; we need something that really explores the world and characters we already know and love. A spin-off, something fresh, would be way better. Right now, it just feels like Blizzard is missing a big opportunity with Rush. It’s not what the series needs to keep growing.
