Bloodlines 2 Was a Disappointment for Vampire Fans, but This 2026 RPG Won’t Be

Although vampires are popular in movies and books, they don’t often take center stage in video games. While the Castlevania series is well-known, it hasn’t had a new release in years, and even with the success of Vampire Survivors, most game developers aren’t focusing on vampire-themed games. As a longtime fan of games like Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption and Bloodlines, I was really looking forward to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. Unfortunately, like many others, I was disappointed with the final product and it didn’t meet my expectations.

Good news for vampire game fans! Rebel Wolves is creating The Blood of Dawnwalker, and the team includes experienced developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3. I’m especially impressed with their fresh take on vampire lore and how it’s integrated into the gameplay. While Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 didn’t quite hit the mark, The Blood of Dawnwalker looks like it could be the definitive vampire game we’ve been waiting for.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Emerging as the Vampire RPG Fans Actually Wanted

Good vampire role-playing games are rare. Fans are starting to doubt we’ll ever see a Blade game. While Arkane, known for Dishonored, stumbled with Redfall, the biggest letdown was Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. Despite a troubled development and multiple restarts, I still had some hope the game’s world would save it. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the original Bloodlines, leaving me looking for the next promising vampire game.

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, you’ll find yourself in a dark fantasy version of 14th-century Europe, where vampires reign. You play as Coen, a Dawnwalker with a unique ability: he can live as a human by day and transform into a powerful vampire at night, allowing for diverse combat and exploration. Your choices, actions, and how you navigate the world directly impact the story and its ending. However, the core of the game revolves around time – even as an immortal vampire, every moment matters in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, Rebel Wolves has created a world where time is a crucial element of gameplay. You’re tasked with rescuing Coen’s family, but every action you take advances the clock. This forces you to make difficult choices about who to save, knowing you can’t help everyone. Alternatively, you can embrace your vampire instincts and act purely on those desires. This game is all about living out vampire fantasies, and I’m incredibly excited to play it.

Former Witcher 3 Devs Are Crafting a Vampire World Worth Sinking Your Teeth Into

I’m really excited about The Blood of Dawnwalker because of the people making it. The studio, Rebel Wolves, is new, but it’s filled with developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3, a game many consider to be one of the best RPGs of all time. That experience is impressive, but even more encouraging is their approach to development. They’ve shown they’re willing to listen to feedback – including valid criticisms about things like the camera – and make changes to The Blood of Dawnwalker, as seen in their development videos.

The creators of The Blood of Dawnwalker clearly learned from the success of The Witcher 3. Like that game, Dawnwalker features a complex world with morally ambiguous choices, intricate relationships, and stories that extend beyond the main plot. Instead of relying on predictable tropes, it delves into the gray areas of right and wrong that made The Witcher 3 so captivating. Early impressions suggest the writing is excellent – realistic, focused on characters, and with NPCs who have believable motivations and factions rooted in history. Quests seem to offer meaningful choices that genuinely impact the story, something the game Bloodlines 2 failed to deliver.

The game’s world feels naturally developed and assured. Rather than simply copying a tabletop game’s style, The Blood of Dawnwalker is building a unique mythology, blending gothic horror with political schemes and deeply personal stories. The art style perfectly captures the mood with shadowy streets, dimly lit interiors, mysterious ruins, and a generally oppressive nighttime feel – everything I’d hope for in a supernatural RPG. It has a carefully crafted quality that vampire games haven’t achieved in almost twenty years.

How The Blood of Dawnwalker Is Fixing Everything Bloodlines 2 Got Wrong

It’s a lot to ask any new vampire RPG to live up to classics like Bloodlines and Redemption, but fans were optimistic about Bloodlines 2. It had a strong foundation with a well-known name and a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the game didn’t quite deliver, suffering from uneven writing, awkward movements, limited role-playing options, and a world that felt empty despite being filled with vampires. However, The Blood of Dawnwalker seems determined to fix these issues.

What sets this game apart is that your decisions truly have weight, particularly how they interact with the game’s time system. It avoids simple ‘good’ or ‘bad’ choices, offering the same nuanced morality found in games like The Witcher 3. This makes your actions feel meaningful because the game world is so immersive – bustling with background chatter, characters who react to your choices, and hidden areas that encourage exploration. It genuinely feels like a living world that continues to evolve even when you’re not actively playing. Given the talent of the development team, I’m confident the writing will bring the story and world to life.

Unlike the somewhat awkward combat in Bloodlines 2, Dawnwalker’s battles feel smooth and connected. It blends supernatural powers with realistic hand-to-hand fighting and stealth, offering a variety of ways to play. The developers at Rebel Wolves have created exciting combat for both the human and vampire sides of the main character, and I’m eager to try it out. Based on what I’ve seen, The Blood of Dawnwalker has the potential to be the best vampire game of its kind this generation, and could even be as memorable as the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
