Bloodsport is a beloved, influential film that helped kickstart a trend of martial arts action movies in the United States. It launched the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme, who became a huge star in the 1990s thanks to his looks and fighting abilities. The film was also a big success for Cannon Films, earning $50 million despite only costing around $2 million to make. Now, a remake of Bloodsport is in the works, and the concept is surprisingly original.
The story behind the movie Bloodsport is almost as captivating as the film itself. It centers on Frank Dux, an army captain played by Van Damme, who secretly enters a deadly, illegal underground fighting tournament called the Kumite. While competing, he’s pursued by military investigators determined to arrest him. For years, Bloodsport was believed to be a true story based on Frank Dux’s life, but that claim has come under scrutiny. The idea of a secret, no-holds-barred fighting tournament has been copied many times since (like in Mortal Kombat), but creating something that truly lives up to Bloodsport is a real challenge.
A24’s Bloodsport Will Hit Different

A24, known for its critically acclaimed independent and genre films, is producing a new take on the classic movie Bloodsport. They’ve brought in Michaela Coel, who has worked with the studio several times before, to write and direct this reimagining. Sources say the new film will focus more on the loneliness and challenges of intense training and competition in the world of fighting sports.
Coel expressed her admiration for fighters and the incredible dedication, focus, and personal sacrifice required in the sport. She’s thrilled to begin exploring this world, and excited to be working with A24 on the project, enthusiastically stating, ‘Let’s go!’

Producer Marc Toberoff shared that he’s excited to revive the high-energy martial arts tournament format of the classic 1988 film Bloodsport for a new movie. He believes the original film helped introduce audiences to a raw and realistic style of fighting.
Michaela Coel recently gained acclaim for creating and directing the groundbreaking HBO series I May Destroy You. This year, she’ll be releasing another series called First Day on Earth. She’s also appearing in the thriller Mother Mary alongside Anne Hathaway this April, playing a costume designer and the close friend of Hathaway’s character, a pop star attempting a career resurgence.
The original film Bloodsport spawned three sequels in the mid-to-late 1990s, none of which featured Jean-Claude Van Damme. Several attempts have been made to remake it, including a project from the 2010s centered on a veteran of the Afghanistan War competing in a Brazilian martial arts tournament. That remake was once planned to be directed by James McTeigue, who directed V for Vendetta. This new version promises a visually striking style and could introduce Letitia Wright’s work to a larger audience.
