“Blown Away”: First ‘Masters of the Universe’ Reaction Teases “Crazy Creatures”

Mattel Studios’ President has been enthusiastically promoting Masters of the Universe, but it’s unclear if this is genuine excitement or just marketing for the film. Following the huge success of the Barbie movie, Masters of the Universe will be Mattel’s second big live-action feature. The film will be directed by Travis Knight, who previously directed Bumblebee, and Nicholas Galitzine will play the role of He-Man.

I recently read an interview with Robbie Brenner, the president of Mattel Studios, in *The Hollywood Reporter*, and she gave me a really exciting update on the *Masters of the Universe* movie! She actually just saw a director’s cut and said she was completely blown away – seriously, she thinks it’s amazing. Apparently, it’s going to be their second big theatrical release, and she sees it as a perfect companion piece to *Barbie*. She really emphasized how much fun it is and how different it feels. She also mentioned the sheer size of the production, talking about all the incredible sets they’ve built. As a movie fan, I’m definitely getting hyped!

I visited the set last year, and honestly, it was the largest I’ve ever seen – even bigger than the *Barbie* set. It was huge! We used two or three sound stages and a large portion of the backlot. The movie features some incredible, larger-than-life characters, including ones that are eight feet tall!

Does ‘Masters of the Universe’ Have the Power?

The new *Masters of the Universe* movie boasts a strong cast alongside actor Nicholas Galitzine. Notable names include Camila Mendes (known from *Riverdale* as Teela), Idris Elba (*Luther*) as Man-at-Arms, Alison Brie (*Community*) as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin (*Deadpool*) playing the Sorceresses of Castle Greyskull, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (*Game of Thrones*) as Goat Man, and Kristen Wiig (*Bridesmaids*) as Roboto. However, after the disappointing performance of *Tron: Ares*, many are concerned about Jared Leto’s portrayal of the villain, Skeletor.

The story of *Masters of the Universe* first appeared as a live-action movie in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren, but it wasn’t successful in theaters. Since then, there have been many attempts to revive the franchise, especially after the success of the 2007 film *Transformers*. Over the past twenty years, several directors – including John Woo, John Stevenson, John M. Chu, McG, and Aaron and Adam Nee – have been considered to helm a new *Masters of the Universe* movie. Netflix bought the rights in 2022, but canceled its planned film on July 18, 2023, just three days before the release of *Barbie*.

As a huge cinema fan, I was thrilled to hear Amazon MGM snapped up the rights to *Masters of the Universe* and is really pushing forward with it! It’s currently slated for release on June 5th, 2026 – prime summer movie season. That means it’ll be competing with some big names like *The Mandalorian & Grogu*, *Toy Story 5*, and *Supergirl*. Honestly, it’s going to take a lot to get people excited with so much else coming out. While I doubt it’ll reach the massive heights of *Barbie*, if it’s as good as Robbie Brenner promises, it could genuinely be the summer’s surprise hit and bring this classic toy brand back to life for a whole new generation of fans.
