Following the cancellation of a planned online game based on God of War by Sony last year, Bluepoint Games will close its doors in March. PlayStation has confirmed to Bloomberg that this decision will lead to approximately 70 employees losing their jobs, following a recent evaluation of the business.
Bluepoint Games is a remarkably skilled development team, and their technical abilities have consistently created amazing games for PlayStation fans. We are grateful for their dedication, innovative ideas, and high-quality work.
Bluepoint Games is famous for the recent Demon’s Souls Remake, but they’ve also remastered several classic games like God of War Collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Many people consider their 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus to be the game that really put them on the map, as it was widely praised by critics.
Sony bought the studio in 2021, and it went on to work on games like God of War Ragnarok. They were also developing a live-service God of War game that was ultimately cancelled in January 2025, after being in development for a while. PlayStation stated the cancellation wouldn’t shut down the studio, and it appears Bluepoint has been working on a new project for the past year.
Bluepoint Games is the latest first-party studio to close its doors after Sony’s attempt to create successful live-service games didn’t pan out. Other studios affected include SIE London Studio, which was developing a fantasy game, and Firewalk Studios, the team behind the unsuccessful game Concord. Despite these closures and layoffs, Sony is still planning to release more live-service titles, such as 4:Loop from Bad Robot Games and Horizon Hunters Gathering by Guerrilla Games.
